Postpartum depression can be devastating and confusing at first. Going through the rollercoaster of having the baby only to be left with a shell of the person you knew before can be distressing for any dad. But there are some things that you can do to help your partner get through postpartum depression. Here are some of the things you can do to get your partner back on their feet.

Understand the Biology of PPD

First of all, you have to understand that postpartum depression is a real illness and not just “being moody”. There are some real psychological and biological reasons behind your partner’s condition and she can’t just “snap out of it”. Hormonal and immune system changes, and changes in blood pressure, the cardiovascular system and metabolism all contribute to PPD. All these processes can have a profound effect on your mood, brain function and overall perception of the world. So understand that this is not an act and a true medical issue.

Understand that Environment Can Have an Influence on Biology

However, while postpartum depression is mainly influenced by biology, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t things that can be done to improve the environment and alleviate the symptoms. She’ll eventually get back on her feet if you give her the proper environment and allow her to enjoy some alone time.
