I just love stumbling upon a small business whose creations are beautiful and made from the earth but also whose values are in line with how I live my life.

About seven months ago I discovered an absolute gem of a shop on Etsy. I can always find such unique items on Etsy but there was something so warm and magical about this shop and I just knew that something in it was calling me.

I took my time, explored, discovered, and felt…yes I felt an energy coming from all of the treasurers in this shop.

Mystic Orb Shop quickly became one of my favorite shops on Etsy. So did Wooly Moss Roots, Mystic Orb’s sister shop. It took me some time before I found THE item that spoke to me, but once I did, I wasted no time in ordering it. Gorgeous isn’t it??

And then just a couple of weeks ago, I saw this:

Not often does a material object produce such a swell of energy in me but I could feel that this piece was made for me. And so now, it is mine.

Besides the fact that everything both shops offer could easily find their way into my home, I just love their overall approach to business and creating sustainable products. Here is a little tidbit from their Etsy profile:

It wasn’t until a few months ago that I realized that the main artist for Mystic Orb (Jeff) and his wife (Taryn) both spent time writing two vastly different but equally inspiring blogs. While Taryn keeps things a little closer to home, writing about her creations, family life, living close to the earth, and the beauty of a real foods lifestyle, Jeff tends to write some really powerful pieces that always get my mind whirling. He is always spot on and inspires me to want to take action against that which oppresses us. Seriously…Jeff’s writings are some of the best works I have ever read.

I wanted to give you all a chance to learn a little more about Taryn and her beautiful family and way of life. Please take a moment to get all touchy-feely with an inspiring woman!

You have two of my favorite shops on Etsy. Sometimes I go there to just get lost in the imagery of it all. Tell everyone a little bit about what they can expect to find in your shops.

We started with our Mystic Orb Shop. My husband Jeff loves carving natural wooden jewelry in reclaimed woods. Sometimes he includes stones and other natural materials and he loves carving tree pendants. Besides jewelry, we also have wood creations for the home and garden. We have wood boxes, spoons, carved garden signs and more.

After we started making herbal salves and handmade wooden buttons, we decided it was time to start a second Etsy Shop, Wooly Moss Roots with wooden buttons, wooly delights, and herbal goodness. In that shop we have a variety of buttons in reclaimed woods for knitters, sewers, and crafters. We also have herbal goodness: natural body care, seeds, and more. It started with making natural products for ourselves and loving them, which led to wanting to share them with others. And finally, we have wooly delights: from purses and knitted cowls to felted pouches and wool creatures.

We love what we do and are so grateful when others love it too!

What are your personal favorite things to create, be it for your shop or for your family?

Hmmm… I’m happiest with a wide variety of creative projects going. I love creating so many different things and go through periods of different favorites. For my family, I really love creating nourishing meals and I love preserving food to store for the winter (fermenting, drying, canning, freezing.) For my family, I also really love knitting and sewing (though I haven’t done much sewing in a long time.) For our shops, I love creating felted wool pouches and purses …making salves, lip balms, and tooth powder.. doing the writing for our magnets and signs for Jeff to carve… I love it all. Another one of my favorite things to create is greeting cards. I used to sell those in our market booth and am planning on making them again.

You have the most amazing outlook and approach to living. Motherhood, GAPS, creating, selling, living off your land…you really have a full plate! How do you find balance with all that you have going on?

Thank you! …That’s a really good question. Some days I seem to be on the flow, things go smoothly, and I’m amazed at how much I can get done, do, and create. Other days I seem out of balance and just getting everyday things done- laundry, dishes- takes all my time. Some days balance is a struggle. Sometimes balance comes more easily. With time, I’m learning what I need to feel balanced, happy, energetic, and productive. The better I take care of myself, the more I can live the life I want to live. Bracken, our one year old son, is my greatest teacher. He teaches me to bend, to be flexible. Sometimes I’ll be in the middle of something that needs to get done and he’ll pull on my arm with all his might, wanting to go outside (where he always wants to be.) When I take a break with him to walk around the yard, even if it’s just for a few minutes, we can both come back inside feeling more refreshed. I’m also learning to slow down to his pace and be more in the moment. And to savor the quiet moments to myself, no matter how brief.

Something else that helps me to balance a very full life is having a planner. I use it every day to write down my goals and what needs my attention that day. Caring for Bracken is always number one, my most important job. When I find myself in the midst of feeling flustered and overwhelmed, I can go to my planner to see what I need to accomplish and stay focused. I prioritize too. The business needs attention. Many things are left undone in the garden. Nourishing meals are a priority. Another thing I do is to try to limit distractions because they can keep me from doing what I need to get done.

When I follow my inspiration, wherever it leads me, everything always works out best. When I trust it, things get easier

If you could do one thing, anything, right this second, what would it be?

Soak in a tub of warm clay or lay in a hammock for an entire day. Hehe. That’s just what popped into my head. Both sound really nice right now, don’t they? To just relax and do nothing sounds pretty blissful. (Jennifer speaking here: Yes Taryn, yes it sure does!)
