Children are deeply rooted in and connected to the natural world. I discussed this in Nature – The Ultimate Healer For Children.

Gemstones and crystals are a key element of the natural world and play an important role in physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. Children have a profound and innate connection to the healing attributes and energies of stones and crystals so much so that they naturally gravitate towards these at a very young age. Yet so many children are not encouraged to explore the healing powers of these natural elements.
Gemstones and crystals have been used in medicine for more than 5,000 years in China, India and other ancient cultures. They house spiritual and healing properties that can be tapped into in a variety ways. Each type of stone has its own unique talent and area of focus. Shapes, colors, and textures all carry a special meaning.

Below are 25 (add one more) gemstones and crystals which can specially support children with various issues and challenges.

Amethyst – the master healing crystal. It has the ability to purify and transmute all forms of negativity. Amethyst will help children in the midst of a transition (i.e. a death in the family, parent going back to work, moving).  For children with various disabilities or with either emotional or physical pain, an Amethyst cluster in their room will help clear unwanted energies, bringing the room into a balanced state. For local pain, hold the Amethyst directly on or over the area for up to twenty minutes. Amethyst also helps with nightmares or insomnia – Place a piece of Amethyst on the child’s nightstand or under a pillow.
Apache Tearhelps children with any form of sadness.
Aventurine - a leadership stone. It is very loving, embracing and protective of the heart. It is an excellent stone for children who are shy and/or timid, and suppressing their leadership qualities. This stone helps them to become active and to initiate action on their own accord.  Asthmatic children seem attracted to Aventurine as it opens up the lungs, giving them some relief. It balances out polar energies.
Blue Lace Agate – helpful for children who are argumentative and have a short temper. It allows them to practice more peaceful communication.
Carnelian Agatecan be used to help with feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Useful for promoting self-security and self-love. Carnelian Agate encourages love between parents and children. It helps girls to appreciate their bodies while aiding creativity. Carnelian can also be used for dermatological ailments such as acne by holding the stone over the skin and moving it in circles for several minutes, several times a day.
Charoite – aids with insomnia and difficulty settling into sleep.
Chrysoprase – protects children suffering from frequent nightmares.
Citrine – useful for self-esteem and self-confidence issues.
Clear Quartzknown as the “Healing Crystal.” Its energy is unique and when a child makes contact with the right one, the natural energy of Quartz can be just enough to transform a disharmonious thought pattern, burn off some negative emotional state, or even place the spiritual seeds of one’s future into consciousness. Quartz crystal clusters are also helpful to organize scattered thoughts and to deflect negative energies.
Golden Calcite – a great stone for building self-esteem. It also provides courage.
Hematite – provides protection and dispels negativity. It gives children strength and courage.
Howlite  – a “tranquility stone”. It calms communication, enhances emotional expression, and eliminates stress, rage and rudeness. It assists with the attainment of goals by encouraging ambition and eliminating hesitation.
Jade – a soother of emotions. Emotionally sensitive children often need a supportive system to ensure that their feelings do not overwhelm them. Jade enhances confidence, self-assurance and self-reliance. Jade is also very inspirational in helping children achieve their desires in life.
Lapis Lazulia wonderful stabilizer for children who show psychic gifts early in life. The deep blue color stimulates expansion of consciousness in a very supportive way, promoting purification and clarify of spiritual insight. Lapis Lazuli instills self-acceptance of one’s given gifts and encourages openness of one’s spiritual awareness.
Moldavite – a useful stone for sensitive children who find it difficult being in incarnation on the earth and who cannot adjust to suffering and deep emotions. Many such children are “star children” who have come to aid the earth in its time of transition to a new vibration. They are not used to the heavy energies of earth and find it difficult to integrate their spiritual bodies into the physical, and need to ground. Moldavite also supports qualities such as empathy and compassion.
Moonstone – a wonderful stone for children dealing with emotional overwhelm and hyperactivity. It can be rubbed over the forehead and temples.
Pink Tourmaline – a good choice for children recovering from abuse. It brings deep comforting love energy. It transforms negative behavior into positive.
Pyrite – an extremely protective stone. Pyrite is like a small mirror, reflecting negative energy away. It also instills a feeling of physical empowerment.
Rhodonite – helps children who are impatient. Children should rub it in his or her hand when feeling impatient. Brings about a feeling of calm and peacefulness.
Rose Quartza strong healing crystal for children because it exhibits gentle positive vibrations. Rose Quartz is a good choice for those children who have a lot of hurt feelings or aggressive tendencies. It can sooth a broken heart shattered by seeing raw reality – the way things are, rather than the way one wants them to be. For hyperactive children, Rose Quartz soothes erratic emotional states, anxiety, fear, compulsions, and many other mental disorders. You can hold Rose Quartz over the child’s heart, wear as a pendant, or put a piece in a pouch to wear around their neck.
Serene Prehnite – the stone of unconditional love. It is a good stone for children who are overly possessive. Prehnite alleviates nightmares, phobias and deep fears, uncovering and healing the dis-ease that creates them. It is beneficial for hyperactive children and the karmic causes that underline the condition.
Sunstone – helps children who are overprotective and possessive.
Tiger’s Eye – is a grounding stone. Sometimes children get carried away and get lost in their dream world. Tiger’s Eye helps to pull them back. This stone is also very useful to help put thoughts into action.  Tiger’s Eye teaches them to listen to their intuition while providing self-esteem. It also promotes the courage to do the right thing. Tiger’s Eye is also a good protection stone while traveling.
Turquoise – helpful if your child has difficulty asking others for help. Allows the child to relax and let go.
Variscite – brings peace and harmony to the heart. It enhances life by generating feelings of inner peace, love and compassion, and is excellent to aid any child with stress or anxiety.
There are a lot of other gemstones and crystals which offer powerful healing properties. This short list gives you a start on finding the ones your child might benefit from. If you are interested in learning more about these 25 gemstones or crystals or in finding additional ones, I highly recommended the book The Crystal Bible.
So now that you know which gemstone or crystal your child might benefit from, how do you go about incorporating these into his or her life? It is actually pretty easy and since children are naturally attracted to the energies contained within the stones.
Here are a few suggestions as to how children can use healing gemstones and crystals:
  • Worn on the body (necklace, ring, bracelet, or anklet).
  • Worn close to the body (kept in a medicine pouch, pocket, or on a special key ring style clip). Tie a small stone or crystal bead onto their shoelaces. They child receives the healing energy and does not lose the stone.
  • Kept under a pillow or tucked inside a dream pillow.
  • Placed in bathwater or around the edge of the bathtub.
  • Held during meditation or quite time.
  • Placed in their room.
It is important to note, that gemstone and crystals need to be “cleansed” from time to time. They pick up and absorb negative energy and can be drained of their energy after being used for a while. Gemstones and crystals should be periodically cleansed and charged to ensure they can be used efficiently for healing purposes.

A simple and potent method for cleansing gemstones is to present each of the stones to the four elements, something your child will enjoy assisting with.

  • Air – present the stone to the east and pass the object through the smoke of burning incense. Or take the stone outside on a breezy day and let it spend a few minutes absorbing the energy from the wind.
  • Water – present the stone to the west and pass the object through a bowl of water. Or take the stone to a nearby river or stream and wash it in the fresh water.
  • Fire – present the stone to the south and pass the object through the flame of a candle or small fire. Or the stone can be placed outside and left out overnight in the light of the moon. If pressed for time, simply take the gemstones and crystal outside for a few minutes during the heat of the noonday sun.
  • Earth – present the stone to the north and wave a previously charged rock or crystal over the stone that is being cleansed. Or, if time is not a concern, bury the gemstone or crystal for a few days, in the ground or in a clay pot filled with dirt.
After the gemstone or crystal has been cleansed, it will need to be recharged with positive energy.  Again, this is easy to do and something your child is quite capable of. Hold the gemstone or crystal in your dominant hand, close your eyes, and picture the stone filling with positive, powerful energy. Alternatively, you can leave it out in full sun to recharge for a few hours.

Do your children use gemstones and crystals? Are they naturally drawn to any in particular?
