Fantasy Football Outlook: Don’t read too much into talk about the Saints wanting to run the football more this season. The Saints will attempt to run more, but their defense leaves much to be desired as they were one of the worst groups statistically in the history of the NFL last year and are switching to a 3-4 base defense.
We certainly shouldn’t believe in new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan to turn things around given his history so expect Brees to remain as one of the top quarterbacks in passing attempts this season. I do have concerns about the teams left tackle situation, but Brees is a savvy veteran and I’m sure with the help of Sean Payton they will find ways to make things work.
Consider Brees and Aaron Rodgers the only quarterbacks worth drafting in the first three rounds of even 12-team leagues with the depth at the position giving us the luxury of waiting for a quarterback.

Summer of 2012: Fantasy Projections
Drew Brees took his game to another level with the addition of Darren Sproles and the Jimmy Graham rise to stardom. Because Brees is so sharp in his pre snap reads, he knows how to manipulate the defense wit these two players, often creating mismatches.
While the Saints continue to mix in the run, this offense will go through Brees and with suspensions enforced on the defense, with new veterans coming to town, expect the Saints to have an even harder time on defense.
One thing I’ve thought about, for some time now; how will the loss of Sean Payton affect this offense? While we’ve not seen Payton entirely out of the picture before, we did get a glimpse into the future when Payton was forced to remain in a booth after a leg injury, forced him from the sidelines.
Because Payton’s injury happened at the start of their week six game against the Buccaneers, I’ve included Brees’s stats in that game and have a chart below on his performance when Payton was in the booth.
OPP | Comp | Att | Yards | TD | INT |
@Buccaneers | 29 | 45 | 383 | 1 | 3 |
Colts | 31 | 35 | 325 | 5 | 0 |
@ Rams | 30 | 44 | 269 | 1 | 2 |
Buccaneers | 27 | 36 | 258 | 2 | 1 |
Avg | 29.25 | 40 | 308.75 | 2 | 1.5 |
While it’s hard to trend against ranking Brees as the No.2 fantasy quarterback, those numbers above are down in all key categories being yards, touchdowns and interception (this one was actually up, which of course is a negative) when Payton was out.
Furthermore, look at the teams they played, Colts, Rams, and twice against the Buccaneers (Saints have a history of problems with Tampa Bay), these are the bottom feeder teams in the league, surely you would think Brees wouldn’t have down numbers against these teams. Almost makes you wonder what will happen when they play stiffer competition?
Again, Brees is still a top quarterback in fantasy, I’m mainly pointing this information out above to suggest it shouldn’t surprise anyone if he struggles a little more this year.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
The Saints’ offense seemed to start out slow coming off their Super Bowl season but in the end Drew Brees had another fabulous stat line that fantasy owners felt good about. With so much success it would seem like Brees should be at least the second best quarterback in fantasy football but in some leagues you might see him go as low as the fourth or fifth quarterback selected this summer.
Brees will probably post great stats once again but with the emergence of Michael Vick and Philip Rivers last season, fantasy owners have more options to consider beyond Brees, Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers as an elite quarterbacks. Then again, when half of a ten team league is getting at clear top notch quarterback, it starts to make me wonder if there is such a thing as a clear dominant thrower these days. Anyway you slice it, Brees should post top flight numbers once again as the Saints gear up for another run at a Championship.

2010 Preview
Drew Brees has been one of the top fantasy quarterbacks for the past four seasons. Expect Brees to continue his aggressive ways in the passing game as he should have all his talent around him once again in 2010
2010 Fantasy Football Outlook
2009 Fantasy Year In Review: What else can be said about Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints last season. Brees had another great fantasy season even tough the Saints had the hardest schedule against the pass coming into the year.
With a solid offensive line and a great supporting cast, Brees led his team to a Super Bowl victory as they now ride on their high horse into this season.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: What else can Brees and the Saints great offense do but have more success. Peyton Manning failed to win a Super Bowl with a highly aggressive offense and the team played it more conservative and won a championship.
That formula wasn’t needed for Brees and his team as they thrived on being aggressive and have won a Super Bowl doing so. Because they have won this way, fantasy owners should expect this offense to continue doing what has taken them to a title. That plan of attack, is very good for Brees and his fantasy value as he should post another terrific season.
