Summer of 2012: Fantasy Projections

Do you believe in Eli? That one question will determine if you are serious about grabbing him on draft day. Sure, you can say the same thing about any player, but it seems many in fantasy world have grown to knock Manning for letting you down when you need him most, but in reality, the guy threw for almost 5,000 yards last year, so we shouldn’t question his production.

Yes, the Giants lost Mario Manningham but for those of you that actually pay attention to his game, he’s really an overrated, sloppy player and the addition of Rueban Randle should be considered an instant upgrade.

As Randle develops, it will be interesting to see if the Giants opt to play him on the outside, and move Victor Cruz back into the slot. This was where Cruz made a majority of his plays from last year, and you can bet New York will create ways of moving him around.

While Manning has proven to be a worthy selection as the sixth best fantasy quarterback to take, recent ADP results have him coming in eight just behind Michael Vick and his brother Peyton Manning. Clearly, Manning still has value so if you can land him around the 5th or 6th round consider it a solid addition.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections

Free agency hasn’t been kind to Eli Manning as veterans Steve Smith and Kevin Boss have ventured off the farm and are now with new teams. While Manning still has Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham, it will be up to other pass catchers in the offense to give him that extra bump for his stats to be worthy of a starter in ten team leagues.

Don’t be surprised if that happens as Manning has a firm grip of his offense and has done a great job of coaching up young talent and throwing them open. Manning is in the prime of his career and makes for an excellent compliment option if you roll the dice on a younger quarterback like Matthew Stafford, Matt Ryan, Josh Freeman or Sam Bradford.

If those option fail to make the impact you were hoping for, Manning can give you respectable numbers and help you win in fantasy leagues.

The Giants’ offense shifted from run first to throw first in 2009 and that trend continued in 2010 as Eli Manning has matured from his early days, and the Giants have a quality receiving core. While I thought Hakeem Nicks was probably one more year away from being a top ten fantasy receiver, he proved me wrong and Manning’s uptick in touchdowns reflected that growth.

Coming into 2011, the Giants will probably resign possession receiver Steve Smith, but he is expected to be a candidate for the PUP list to begin the season. With Smith out, it is understandable that the team drafted Jerrel Jernigan in the third round to give Manning another weapon.

At this time, Manning is clearly a starting quarterback in ten team fantasy leagues, but I would like to see his interception total move down from his league high 25. That should happen as Manning has been respectable in that area most years, so look for Manning to post over 250 per game and produce a solid touchdown total once again.

2010 Preview

Will the Giants allow Eli Manning to throw the football like he did in 2009? That is the big question for fantasy as we know what Manning and his receivers can do when they are allowed to be aggressive in the passing game. Young receivers Nicks, Manningham and Smith should only be more improved as they mature in the NFL.

2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Coming into the 2009 season there were major questions about which receiver(s) would actually fill the void left by Plaxico Burress. The answer came early in September as Steve Smith and Mario Manningham go off to hot starts.

As the season moved along, first round pick Hakeem Nicks took away the starting job from Maningham and flashed his game breaking ability. Eli Manning ended up having more fantasy football value than ever before as he posted his best stat line as a pro.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: I don’t believe the Giants will become a run heavy offense again this year as Manning has become much more than a game manager. To be honest this offense would probably be better suited with Ahmad Bradshaw in the backfield as he can catch the football and is a nice slash style compliment to the passing game.

Smith, Maningham and Nicks are only going to get better and Manning’s offensive line is solid for protection. Look for Peyton’s little brother to be a nice fantasy option as he should be selected around the eight best fantasy quarterback this season.
