Summer of 2012: Fantasy Projections

The man from Alabama proved why he was a worthy top ten selection at the NFL draft, as the Falcons gave away many draft picks to move up and take him. Julio Jones struggled some with his route running in camp but as the season went along, this game-changing receiver was the better fantasy play over Roddy White, down the stretch.

Expect that trend to continue, and while Jones is a better talent than White, his WR1 type value is in part because defenses will account for White as the top receiver in the offense.

In current ADP trends we see White going off the board as the 4th overall receiver in both standard and PPR leagues. Jones on the other hand, is going as an early WR2 falling to the 13th receiver off the board in both leagues’ styles.

Don’t be the one to draft White, even if he may hold a little more value in PPR leagues because of his reception total. It’s better to focus your WR1 on another receiver like Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, A.J. Green, etc. Then look for Jones a round later, or wait on a receiver and nab up Jones in the fourth round or fifth round.

Expect Jones to have an even better year and he could very well finish as a top five receiver in his second season.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections

The Falcons needed another playmaker in the offense as they’ve had to rely on Roddy White and an aging Tony Gonzalez as the main options in the passing game. Rookie Julio Jones was worthy of a top ten selection on draft days as he instantly gives opposing defenses someone to be concerned about in the vertical game, besides White.

While running back Michael Turner still has another year or two of being a respectable feature back, this offense is going to start leaning on the talented arm of fourth year quarterback Matt Ryan. With the addition of Jones, clearly Ryan has a core of weapons to be a regular Pro Bowl type of quarterback and a future starting quarterback in ten team fantasy football leagues.

Look to Jones as the top receiver to select in dynasty leagues, this season, and he makes for an interesting draft choice in standard redraft leagues. As will all rookies, we need to see Jones take the steps in the preseason that allow him to win a starting job to begin the season. If healthy, I have no doubts that Jones will do just that. Because of the presence of White and Gonzalez, I look to Jones as a more valuable option in standard to big play leagues than PPR as he probably won’t rackup many days over three or four receptions as a rookie.
