Fantasy Football Outlook: A trendy breakout option through the month of August, Ryan didn’t disappoint those fantasy owners who selected him as he totaled over 4,700 yards passing and 32 touchdowns.

With Julio Jones, Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez all back, Ryan should be going higher than I see him listed in recent ADP trends as the 6th quarterback off the board. Heck, this is about where Ryan was going last summer even before he posted his 2013 numbers, and I would look to him over Cam Newton and even Tom Brady at this point.

Brady lost Wes Welker, Rob Gronkowski had back surgery and week one is in question and Aaron Hernandez has trouble playing a full season. Loss of talent and injury concerns aren’t a problem for Ryan’s crew and I also like his division over the AFC East for higher scoring games.

While Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees should go off the board first, give Ryan consideration close to where Peyton Manning is going and that would be around the 3rd or early 4th round.

Summer of 2012: Fantasy Projections

Having a hard time believing in Matt Ryan as your starting quarterback? Can’t blame you, but instead maybe it’s better to focus on all the talent he has around him. With Roddy White, Julio Jones, Harry Douglas and Tony Gonzalez on board, Ryan has one of the top groups to work within the game.

Factor in Michael Turner is scheduled for a reduction in his workload, and in his place is likely to be second year Jacquizz Rodgers, and you have another weapon on the field, for Ryan to find in the passing game.

Sure Ryan struggles when the pocket collapses, and he doesn’t have the footwork of a former tennis player like Drew Brees, but this is fantasy football and by golly he has what it takes to be a starting quarterback in twelve team leagues.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections

Will this be the season Matt Ryan becomes a clear top ten fantasy quarterback? I’m sure many will feel he has the potential to do that in 2011, with the addition of Julio Jones and when you look at his numbers from last year it’s tempting to believe in Ryan.

So far, Ryan’s early ADP ranking stands him in as the 14th quarterback on Mock Draft Central and the 9th best on Fantasy Football Calculator. Ryan will be a good fantasy quarterback in the future but his situation reminds me of Philip Rivers when LaDainian Tomlinson was still an elite running back.

For a couple of seasons, Rivers was held back some because the Chargers would lean on Tomlinson’s efficient running abilities and his effectiveness in the red zone to score touchdowns. While Michael Turner isn’t quite as good as Tomlinson, his skill set will continue to hurt Ryan’s yardage and touchdown total until he noticeably drops (Turner is 29 years old) in production.

In the end, it only makes sense for a team to ride a horse like Tomlinson or Turner (20.9 rush attempt average last year) because a quality running game can control help you control the football and wear opposing defenses down. While I love Ryan’s increase to 28 touchdowns with only nine interceptions, he will need to increase is yardage numbers to at least over 250 yards a game before he’s ready to be a starting fantasy quarterback in ten team leagues.

If you’re planning on dropping down to take a quarterback this season it makes sense to draft Ryan for at least an early backup on your team. Keep a close eye on Jones’s development in the preseason and the health of Turner as we start the season. Again, Ryan will be a starting fantasy quarterback in the near future, but if you believe in him too much, he could hurt you in the first half of the year, while you’re starting him in hopes of an up tick in production.

2010 Preview

Matt Ryan is now coming of age as he marches into his third year as a pro quarterback. Look for the talented youngster to take another step to becoming a regular fantasy starter this season.

2010 Fantasy Football Outlook

2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Matt Ryan wasn’t ready to be a regular fantasy starter last year but that shouldn’t be a surprise as he was only in his second season. What was good to see is that Ryan threw more touchdowns in fewer games as he posted 22 for the season.

This production continues to show that Ryan should be a good fantasy quarterback in the future.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: This offseason the team is working on throwing the deep ball more often and that should benefit Ryan. Still, this team does have a very good running back and because of that I don’t believe Ryan is ready to be an every week fantasy play.

Look for Ryan to throw for around 3,500 yards and 25 touchdowns in this third season. Because of his talent, he could breakout and have a big year but that might depend on how bad the defense plays as he would have to continue to score points. Ryan makes for a very nice backup quarterback for your fantasy team this season.
