Fantasy Football Outlook: Do you expect big things from Cobb this year? If so, you’re not alone as they ultra-talented slot receiver is not only going as the top Packer receiver in mock drafts, but a top 10 in both standard and PPR ADP results.
Every year we have a handful of players that fantasy owners buy into thinking they will achieve elite status even though we’ve yet to see them actually achieve that status. Julio Jones is a player who comes to mind from last year, and while Jones had a terrific season, it doesn’t always work out that way as Dwayne Bowe coming into his second season comes to mind as a bust that failed to work.
That said, I do think Cobb will improve on his 80 receptions from last year and if Jordy Nelson can put up 15 touchdowns in 2011, then James Jones scored 14 a year ago, why can’t Cobb reach close to 10 with Aaron Rodgers throwing the football?
I’m projecting we will also see a little more from Cobb out of the backfield as he ran for almost 10 yards a carry on his 10 touches last season. Cobb is a weapon out of the backfield and at least he has the threat to give us added production on the ground.
Add it up and Cobb has a chance to be a top 5 stud at his position in PPR leagues and a low-end WR1 in standard leagues. That said, I would pass on Cobb as one of the first 10 to 12 receivers off the board in standard leagues, because I think his top value (unless he has a career year in touchdowns) is a low-end WR1 in those leagues.
He will lead the Packers in receptions and that’s why I believe he can be an elite talent in PPR leagues where you’re picking up points for his catch.

Summer of 2012: Fantasy Projections
It might be another season before Randall Cobb is ready to breakout, if Donald Driver stays on the team. The Packers have one of the deepest receiving cores in the league, but if Cobb was a starter today, I feel he would hold WR2 value.
He’s that talented and going back to read up on draftnik Matt Waldman’s work about Cobb a year ago, I’m happy he graded Cobb as a ferocious blocker on film. Quality skills in the blocking game only increase you odds of earning more playing time.
This second-year talent has all the tools of a star player and while he’s not worth stashing (10, 12 team leagues) until his role expands, dynasty owners would be wise to hold onto him.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
The Packers have had a strong receiving core for a few years now but things are clearly in flux with this group as Donald Driver is on his last legs and James Jones will likely be a free agent casualty. No wonder the Packers selected a receiver at the draft as Randall Cobb projects to be a slot receiver in the teams’ West Coast Offense.
Should anything happen to one of the three receivers ahead of him, Cobb will probably be asked to see extended time on the field, if he’s ready for the challenge. Don’t look to Cobb as a draft worthy option in redraft leagues, but he’s worth stashing in dynasty leagues as Driver could be done with one injury or even retire after this season.
