Summer of 2012: Fantasy Projections

Fantasy Football Outlook: Call me crazy but I was actually on board with the thought process of Reggie Bush being used as the main option in Miami, to start last season. Then rookie, Daniel Thomas was struggling badly in camp and the Dolphins were pumping up Bush as a possible feature runner.

Week one things looked great as Bush was highly active against the Patriots, but then week two came and Thomas was instantly given the bulk of the workload.

I was clearly baffled by this but Thomas looked good, and I kicked myself for having ever thought Bush could be featured for half a year.

Well Bush didn’t do much for the first half of the season, but then he finally got his chance to be a feature type back and had a terrific second half. I always thought this coaching staff gave up on Bush too fast at the beginning of the year, and his play in the second half proved it.

Now a new coaching staff is in Miami, and the plan is to move the offense to a zone blocking scheme. Miami brought in no one significant through free agency for competition, but then they got a steal in the draft by selecting Lamar Miller in the fourth round.

Even last summer, I never thought Bush would hold up for an entire year, and I valued him as decent late to mid-round selection that could give you a nice first half, until he broke down.

If Thomas fails to show vast improvement (don’t be surprised if he struggles) Bush will be in line for that same situation this year.

Current ADP trends have Bush landing as a late RB2 to early RB3 in standard and PPR play. Because I would grade this years running class as the worst I’ve seen in my twenty something years of playing fantasy football, I find that value to be solid.

Just look at the names after about the top fifteen runners — it’s not a pretty site — and fantasy owners will have to decide on who they feel is best to roll the dice on. Keep an eye on Miami’s running situation during training camp, but Bush should be the clear starter.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections

Reggie Bush’s fantasy value was dead if he stayed in New Orleans as the Saints used him primarily as a receiving threat and in special teams. It looks like the Dolphins are set on giving Bush the starting job to begin the season, as they slowly work rookie Daniel Thomas into the offense.

This makes sense for all sides as Bush is out to prove that he can run in-between the tackles and has a decent offense to play in order to showcase his abilities. While I expect Bush to breakdown by the end of October, he should make for a useful flex play option in fantasy leagues, and especially in PPR leagues. While Bush’s carries totals have gone down each year, since his rookie season, I’m willing to believe he can get over 150, if the Dolphins are serious about letting him start.

Bush is a top 30 running back in standard redraft leagues, and a possible top 25 in PPR league formats. That said, make sure you nab Thomas as a hand cuff because Bush is sure to find the shelf at some point, and Thomas should be a factor in the second half of the season.

At first it looked like Reggie Bush was on his way out when the team selected Mark Ingram in the first round, but Coach Sean Peyton clarified that they want to him. For Bush to stay in New Orleans it is expected that he will need to take a massive pay cut as he’s currently way over paid for the production he gives the team.

Because of injury, Bush has continue to take less carries each season he’s played as he’s only total 36 last year and 70 the year before. Truly used as a slot receiver, Bush is still a difference maker in terms of how defense prepare for a game, but he will never be the super star performer he was drafted to be. With Ingram and Pierre Thomas around, Bush isn’t fantasy relevant on draft day.

2010 Preview

Reggie Bush suffered a leg injury and will miss about half the season. Feel free to cut Bush from your squad as he probably won’t be a relevant player for fantasy the rest of this season.

2009 Fantasy Year In Review: Reggie Bush’s fantasy career is a bust overall as his knee problem from college has limited his overall touches he can handle. Once again, we saw Bush’s total carries for the season drop as he went all the way down to 70 on the year.

Thankfully, Bush did play in fourteen games and played throughout the playoffs so it was good to see him not break down as the season went deeper. Bush also continued to show that he is a touchdown relevant player as he posted five rushing scores and three through the air.

This production wasn’t enough to make Bush an every week play for fantasy owners as in most leagues he can’t be counted on for consistent stats.

2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings: Bush’s fantasy value is best held in leagues that allow points for players in the special teams’ area. With his added production in that spot, Bush is a more reliable player overall. For more traditional leagues, Bush makes for a runner worth having on your team but not someone you want to count on every week.

If his knee didn’t limit him, he would probably be a first round pick in many leagues because he would receive much more work regularly. Instead Bush is a backup player but still a game changer for his team. This is why the Saints pay him the money they do and why he will continue to be in the NFL as long as his knee allows.
