Fantasy Football Outlook: Just go back and look at the four games Torrey Smith had in the playoffs as a good example of what his career has been up to this point. Yes, he had a big game against the Broncos and many people will remember that, but in the other three games he posted a 69-yard performance and two others under 40-yards a game without a score in all three contests.
With Anquan Boldin gone, it seems we will have to decide if Smith is ready to increase his workload in the offense, or will he remain a boom or bust option week to week in fantasy leagues?
I think Smith will reach 1,000 yards receiving this year, but don’t expect more than around 60 to 65 receptions in a season. We need to see more from Smith as a possession target before I look to him as the top option in the passing game and that may be tough with little on the other side of the field to respect (from opposing defenses) as I write this post.
Perhaps the Ravens will add a veteran in free agency but I wouldn’t be surprised if they go into the preseason looking to see if a few of their young receivers can earn expanded roles.
If Smith is going to move up to 80 receptions in a season and flirt with WR1 status, it may take a situation much like we saw in Tampa Bay a year ago, where the rebuild on defense struggles and the Ravens are forced to throw the football often to get back into football games, thus offering Smith more opportunities.
That could happen with all the turnover on defense, but for now I would target Smith as more of a early WR3 option.

Summer of 2012: Fantasy Projections
After struggling in camp, Torrey Smith turned it on after a dominant week three performance against the Rams, where he scored three touchdowns in the first half.
I was impressed with Smith last year, as he quickly became the top receiver in the offense. I’m even more impressed when finding out he played with a double hernia all year, one of them having multiple tears in the groin area.
One, the fact that he played through this is a little concerning, as you don’t want it to affect him for the rest of his career, but it’s a testament to his willingness to play through injury.
Two, if he was good enough as a rookie to go for 841 yards and seven touchdowns, with this injury, what will he do in his prime?
The future is bright for Smith. At some point, I will have to go back and watch the film to see if defenses were treating him like the No.1 receiver or Anquan Boldin, down the stretch.
Boldin is clearly a different player than he once was, so it will be interesting to see how defenses attack this team. Smith is a receiver who can tilt coverage and if he can continue to develop as a route runner, his 2012 season could be WR1 worthy.
At this time, Smith is a top 25 receiver on draft day, but his upside as a deep threat and the real number-one receiver in the offense could move him up the boards fast. Current ADP trends have him landing as the 30th receiver (7.07 in 12 team leagues) off the board and I consider that a steal if you can get him close to that price.

Summer of 2011: Fantasy Projections
While every team is hopeful their rookie receiver(s) will make a big impact in year one, maybe the team that needs it the most is the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens are desperate for a deep threat option to make big plays and give the defense something to worry about and second round pick Torrey Smith was brought in to do just that.
No, Smith probably won’t command much respect from NFL defenses in the early going (single coverage) but that makes it all the more important that he finds success. If Joe Flacco and Baltimore plan on winning their division and going to the Super Bowl, they will need this presence in their offense and the other viable targets in this offense are all possession receivers.
While I expect Smith to make an impact, I’m not sure if he’s ready to do it on the week to week basis that many hope he will be. Look for Smith as a top five receiver to take in dynasty rookie drafts and an upside rookie to select in standard ten team redraft leagues. If he’s up to the challenge of providing a deep threat, we could see Smith become a starting option in fantasy football as a rookie.
8/11 Update - With the addition of Lee Evans, rookie Torrey Smith will be the No.3 receiver for Baltimore. Don’t look to Smith as an option to draft in regular redraft leagues. I still like Smith in the long haul for dynasty leagues but he probably won’t do much for your squad for at least the first half of this year.
