Fantasy Football Outlook: Nagging injuries could hold back what looks to be a terrific season and career for the Browns young feature back. What I like about Richardson, is that while he was banged up at times last season, he played through injury and was still a productive option for his fantasy owners.

That’s important and it sets him apart from runners like DeMarco Murray, Darren McFadden and Ryan Mathews who are runners that seem to miss at least four games a year.

Richardson is a RB1 and a first-round pick in fantasy leagues as he will carry the football up to 350 times, catch over 40 receptions and score 12 or more touchdowns with Norv Turner in town. Having Turner around is key and unlike Turner’s former running back Mathews, Richardson has a respectable offensive line to run behind and Richardson has much better vision than Mathews on the football field.

A terrific young player, there is a reason why Richardson was the third pick in last years draft, even though running backs aren’t coveted as early picks in the draft in this age of the NFL. Expect big things from the second year back as Cleveland will be a competitive team and that will keep Richardson on schedule for a potential top five season at his position.

August, 2012: Richardson Has Setback With Another Knee Injury

Richardson has all the tools to be an elite running back in this league, but much like his former teammate Mark Ingram it appears knee problems are a concern.

Early in August Richardson went under the knife for the second time this year, and while he’s expected back before the season, it’s questionable if he will play a full sixteen game schedule.

As is typically the case with knee problems, we want to see if Richardson is having to take time off in practice because of swelling in the knee.

Reggie Bush is a player who comes to mind that had grand expectations but when you read reports about him in camp, even early on, he would miss time because of this problem. Now we don’t know if Richardson will have those issues, but the point is we aren’t likely to know one way or the other until the regular season (after draft day) begins.

When healthy Richardson should touch the football 20 plus times a game and is still worthy of high end RB2 consideration. Like many running backs after Ray Rice, Arian Foster and LeSean McCoy, they bring both upside and concerns of some kind.

May, 2012: Fantasy Projection

Trent Richardson may be the best prospect since Adrian Peterson but even Peterson didn’t begin his career as a feature back. In fact, Peterson technically was the backup to start his rookie year, but an injury to Chester Taylor, week one expanded his role.

Richardson is a different story, as he was labeled the teams’ workhorse back soon after his selection by the Browns.

Unless an injury holds him back, Richardson is primed for a terrific career, and I don’t care if he plays on a team with no passing game, and against the Steelers and Ravens four times a year. That didn’t stop Peyton Hillis from shinning two years ago, and I expect Richardson to be a top ten running back in redraft leagues.

The case should be made for Richardson as high as the sixth overall back off the board; because of his talent, role in the offense, and the fact that he hasn’t let us down with injuries in the past.

Of course he’s a rookie, so he hasn’t had a chance too, but would you take him after Darren McFadden, Chris Johnson, Jamaal Charles, Adrian Peterson, Matt Forte, DeMarco Murray or Marshawn Lynch? Maybe those names work for you, but I’m targeting Richardson and it’s recommended you do the same.
