2013 10-Team Mock Draft Results: 9th Round

Based on recent ADP results, it’s no surprise that the top team defenses came off the board in the 9th round. Both Seattle and San Francisco are worthy top five selections at their position but as a 49er fan I’m concerned about the teams secondary.

Pro Bowl safety Dashon Goldson moved on to the Buccaneers and the 49ers replaced him with first-round pick Eric Reid in the draft. After watching their corners struggle during the playoffs I was also disappointed that they failed to address this position in the draft, instead they added Nnamdi Asomugha in free-agency.

Don’t be surprised if Asomugha fails to win a roster spot because he’s a limited option at this point in his career. As for Reid, we can’t expect a rookie to play at an All Pro level like Goldson in year one, so we should expect this secondary to struggle against capable passing attacks, like when the face Aaron Rodgers week one.

81. Daryl Richardson, STL - Despite drafting Isaiah Pead in the second round last year and adding Zac Stacy this spring, it is Richardson that opened camp running with the first team. As it should be because Richardson was a better running back than Pead last season, and Stacy is still a rookie.

At the end of the day this will probably be a committee approach in St.Louis but Richardson should be the top option from this team on your draft board.

82. Seahawks Defense, SEA – A tough schedule makes it hard to select the Seahawks this high but you have to love the talent on this team. Seattle upgraded the pass rush in the offseason but unfortunately Chris Clemons (knee injury) and Bruce Irvin (four game suspension) probably won’t be with the team in the first month.

83. Andrew Luck, IND - Expect Luck to improve on his rookie numbers and it’s because of quarterbacks like Luck that we are seeing the quarterback position being devalued in fantasy drafts. Luck will throw for over 4,000 and score close to 30 touchdowns, throwing about 26 and running for four or five as well.

84. BenJarvus Green-Ellis, CIN - Green-Ellis should open the season as the Bengals early down running back, but Giovani Bernard will take over at some point. Bernard is a better running back and what he presents to a defense posses more problems as he will be a terrific option in the passing game.

85. Antonio Gates, SD – Gates is on the back side of his career and it will take receiver playing well on the outside to open things up for him. The veteran was still double covered with regularity last season, and needs single coverage to be a worthy TE1 starter going forward.

In short, we could see a good second half from Gates, but he should be inconsistent through the first half of the season.

86. 49ers Defense, SF - As a 49ers fan, I have serious concerns about the teams secondary and I believe they will be exposed against Aaron Rodgers week one. Time will tell but losing DaShon Goldson and adding a rookie isn’t going to make this backfield better.

87. Cecil Shorts, JAC - If not for his quarterback situation and concussion concerns, Shorts would be a top 15 option at the receiver position. He’s that talented and should be a productive WR3 when on the field, no matter the quarterback playing in Jacksonville.

88. Andre Brown, NYG - A sleeper in fantasy drafts if second year running back David Wilson struggles or falls to injury. Brown will have a role in the Giants offense regardless, and should be the favored option in the red zone.

89. Jared Cook, STL - This is a big season for Cook because if he’s not ready for a career year now, I’m not sure he will ever eclipse his numbers from Tennessee. Cook certainly has the talent to be a TE1 option, so taking him around this point isn’t a bad gamble.

90. Danario Alexander, SD - Alexander took the fantasy world by storm in the second half of last season. Trouble is, he was facing single coverage against opposing teams No.2 corner. Teams could treat him as the No.1 receiver if Vincent Brown starts on the other side of the field.

I like Brown over Alexander in fantasy drafts this year and recommend you take Brown at this point and pass on Alexander for a few more rounds.
