Garden Update 5/23/11

What’s growing in my garden:

I’ll be planting the rest of my vegetable plants this week (hopefully). It’s so exciting to see things growing. I have learned a lot over the past couple of weeks.  For example

• Thin plants when they are 2-3″ tall. Pull them out after a rain when the dirt is loose, or use garden scissors to cut the ones you don’t need. Be ruthless!
• Pea seedlings taste like peas.
• All plants look alike when they first emerge (called cotyledens).
• When transplanting herbs, it helps to give them a good trimming so they can spend their energy on growing their roots.
• When transplanting sorrel, cut it down to an inch or so.
• If growing herbs in containers, you need to keep them fertilized or they will use all the nutrients up before you know it and die.
• Plant cilantro seeds every couple of weeks as it bolts in hot weather.
• Always plant mint in a pot, or somewhere you won’t mind it taking over.
• Chives are perennials and come back every year.
• If you can find someone with perennial herbs who wants to divide them, it’s much cheaper than buying the seedlings!
