Good Survival Seeds: Stocking Up for the Future

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The end is nigh, well, maybe not yet but at the current rate of things, mankind is close to consuming all available food sources and stocking up on good survival seeds is starting to sound like a very good idea.

Part of prepping for an apocalypse not only involves surviving the initial impact but it also takes into consideration making sure that you survive the days after the event. Others would train in hunting using basic methods (though some prefer sophisticated firearms) while others would build bomb-proof bunkers to protect not only themselves but also those who are important to them.

These are good strategies when it comes to prepping, but part of being prepared for anything is stocking up on the basic necessities like food and water. Purchasing food stuff right now would mean you would have to replenish them from time to time as they get near their expiration and if the end decides to come a little later on, stocking up continually would mean spending hard earned money on a regular basis for food that you would not get to eat right away.

Stocking up on food is okay for the first few days after the event but you also have to think of replenishing it right after. Who knows what society would be like? This is why aside from hunting and developing construction skills, you should also be able to develop farming skills. Having a small, sustainable, garden provides the solution once you’re food stock runs out.

How to choose the best seeds for survival?

But knowing how to farm is quite different from knowing what to farm and it is always a good idea to know which seeds to store and learn how to cultivate. Here are some factors to consider when choosing the right survival seeds:

 Source – not all seeds are the same, even if they are of the same species. It is more important to know where your seeds are coming from. Organic and heirloom seeds are much better than non-organic ones as they would have lesser impurities and their “parent” plants major points can be passed down to them.

 Climate – each kind of seed will have climate preferences; some would like it hot and dry while some prefer a more humid environment. There are others though that can withstand any weather.

 Yield – choose seeds that will allow you to harvest more from just one seed. Yield is very important as you don’t want to plant seeds that will only give you one fruit for every seed.

 Durability – survival seeds should be able to withstand the test of time more importantly as you don’t want to stock up on seeds that would lose their virility after only a few months.

 Taste – the most important consideration of all. You need to make sure that whatever you plant would be something you would want to it. You don’t want to waste your effort on something you don’t like.

Now that you’ve taken a look at the considerations, it’s time to talk about storing them. Seeds don’t generally last for a long time and you would need to replace them from time to time but storing them properly would extend their lifetimes further.

 Ziploc bags – Ziploc bags can keep away moisture as long as they are sealed properly.

 Jars – jars are always the way to go if you would want to store food items. Some jars come with a vacuum seal that helps extend storage life.

 Combination – the best way to go about storing seeds is to put them in a Ziploc bag and then placing them in jars and then placing them in a cool, dry place.

What kind of survival seeds should you buy?

There are two types of plants that you can and should farm, these are grains and vegetables. Grains are capable of producing a high yield periodically and can withstand almost any weather condition. Wheat, barley and corn are some grains that are sturdy and produce a high yield.

Vegetables are easy to plant and can grow faster than grains. Some vegetables to consider stocking up on are peas, cucumbers and onions. You can also store seeds of fruit-bearing trees so you can plant them when the time comes.

Now that you know which kind of seed you can buy following the considerations previously provided, you can start stocking up on them using either baggies or jars. Check up on them every now and then and replace them as needed. You can also choose to plant them when they start to turn so you would not be wasting seeds. You can use their fruits as sources for heirloom seeds for continued production and storage.
