Vital month for the Euro! Do you need to buy or sell Euros in 2015?

On Friday at its lowest point the Euro weakened to a 5 year low against the dollar and a 7 year low against sterling. This is primarily to do with the prospect of Quantitative Easing in the Eurozone. QE is a process whereby a central bank buys government bonds. It is done to stimulate the economy and generally weakens the currency concerned by increasing the money supply. It seems reasonable to expect the Euro will weaken in 2015 but if buying Euros with sterling, will the pound weaken more? This will be the difficult question, one that we will know more about as the year progresses. The Eurozone still has a trade surplus (they export more globally than they import) and this ‘balance of payments’ means the Euro retains strength. The Euro represents a massive economic area and the certainty this represents means investors like to hold Euros to mitigate the risk from other more volatile currencies. The Euro could be at risk from some strong selling pressures in 2015 and there are a number of political and economic concerns to address. The QE decision will be the 22nd January and the Greek election on the 25th January. If you leave your decision until then and fail to make plans now you might end up disappointed.
