Broward County Sprays for Mosquitoes

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The Broward County Mosquito Control Section sprayed for mosquitoes in the southwest portion of the county this morning.  Affected areas include parts of Pembroke Pines and Southwest Ranches.

Seasonal rains and long-standing puddles have contributed to an increase of the mosquito population in south Florida.

Targeted for spraying was an area bordered by Griffin Road to the north, Pembroke Road to the south, Southwest 184th Avenue to the east and U.S. Highway 27 to the west.

To help prevent mosquitoes from breeding, residents are advised to inspect their yards and drains, destroy or dispose of cans, old tires, buckets, unused plastic swimming pools or other containers that can collect and hold standing water.  Residents should also flush plants weekly, repair leaky pipes, and maintain and clean roof gutters, as these are all potential mosquito breeding locations.

The best protection from mosquito-transmitted diseases, such as the West Nile Virus, is avoiding exposure to mosquito bites altogether.  Experts suggest that residents keep doors and windows closed, stay indoors at dusk and dawn, and to dress in long-sleeved and light color clothing when in a known mosquito infested area.  Insect repellent containing DEET should be sparingly applied to clothing and skin.

Broward County residents experiencing a mosquito nuisance should file an online request at www.broward.org or call 954-765-4062 for assistance.  Residents filing an online request should visit the “Mosquito Services” tab to file a complaint and service request.
