Meet Jonathon Smith, The Man Who Invented Music

My friend Jonathon Smith is a character—a cartoon character who escaped the prison of the printed page.

See the photo to the left? That’s Jonathon. He is naturally blue. He has Smurf Syndrome, which is no laughing matter (except to Gargamel).

I thought I loved music, but Jonathan’s album collection is three times the size of mine. Jonathon’s hair is three times as long as mine, too. Surely this is no coincidence. Maybe all I need to do is grow my hair longer and—POOF!—my record collection will swell.

He is a podcaster who posts his ruminations about music at Radiofree Raytown, which can be found here. He likes to pull peoples’ chains. This is not because he is a prankster, but because he frequently mistakes people for floor lamps.

He writes and records music that can be downloaded at Bandcamp here.

He doesn’t watch movies. At all. Not even movies about music. Which seems weird to me. But he tweeted about watching TMZ recently. Maybe he was pulling our chains.

He says the word “Dude” more often than most people say “the.” But he never substitutes the word “dude” for “the.”

He has a son named Ian who is one month younger than Evie, and a wife named Kate, who is one month younger than Becki (probably).

When I dislike a band he loves, he says outlandish things like, “You don’t like (so-and-so)? Well … that’s like saying you don’t like having legs!” Our tastes do overlap a fair amount, however, so these confrontations are few and far between.
