Windows 8 is all set to be available for PC users. Before you get your hands on this latest version of OS, be prepared to work on the all new Windows 8. Discussed below are a few tips and tweaks that can help you.

The Start Menu

The Start Menu sports an all new look. Accessing this menu is very easy; you could simply move the mouse pointer anywhere at the left bottom of the screen. If you are working on a touch-screen, simply swipe from the right side to access the Start Menu. This is going to work if you are on the developer preview. If you work on the consumer preview, you need to press the Windows Key and X. This opens up a text based menu and gives access to lots of applications and features like the Control Panel, the Search Dialogue Box and the Device Manager among others.

Basic navigation

Windows 8 has brought with it an all new Metro interface. You will find touch-friendly and colorful apps. When working on a touch device, you can access it with a touch of your finger. You can swipe from left to right and select the tab of your interest. While working on your PC, you can use the mouse to scroll back and forth.

Windows Shortcut Keys

Windows 8 is a little different from its predecessors. It will take some time before you get used to this new version. Listed below are a few keyboard short cuts that can help. You will notice that some shortcuts however remain unchanged.

Windows Key + D: Takes you to the desktop
Windows Key + E: Launches Explorer
Windows Key + L: Locks your PC
Windows Key + R: Opens up the Run Box
Windows Key + +: Launches zoom in
Windows Key + -: Launches zoom out
Windows Key + K: Opens up the device panel
Windows Key + Tab: Helps switch between running apps
Windows Key + PgUp: Helps move the current Windows Screen to the Left
Windows Key + PgDn: Helps move the current Windows Screen to the Right

Apart from these, there are other shortcuts you can adopt while working on Windows 8 OS.

Spell check

Just like Microsoft Office comes with the Spell Checker, Metro apps also have spellchecker. It works the same way as it does with Microsoft Office.

Shutting Down

Once you are done and you no longer want to work on your PC, you can shut it down using Windows shutting down tricks- Ctrl + Alt + Del. This will bring up the power button at the bottom right of the screen. Select the option ‘Shut Down’. If you are on the Desktop, use Alt + F4 and choose Shut Down from the various options like Restart, Switch User and Sign Out among others. Without the Start Menu you can shut down Windows 8. Use the Windows Key and press I. This will bring up the Power Button. You can select the Shut Down option.
