ESET NOD32 Antivirus Review

ESET recently came up with the latest version of their NOD32 Antivirus. This new version claims enhanced virus protection and phishing protection. Visibly there is not much to differentiate this version from the previous versions as they have kept the interface mostly similar. The only visible change here is that it now shows four most used features instead of three on the main window. The ESET NOD32 Antivirus not only protects you against viruses, worms, Trojans and spywares but also protects you online.

ESET is really good at its job of detecting malware. Even with new malwares that haven’t been added to the threat database, it is able to perform well and prevent any damage being done. It also manages to clean most of the found malware and prevents from the system being infested by an attack. It has been highly rated by some of the best testing labs around the globe and going by their word, we would give it a ‘thumbs up’ for malware protection.

Most antiviruses try to block the download of a malware by blocking the browser from accessing the URL, interrupting the download or quarantine the file immediately after download. Avast is one antivirus that is really good at this job blocking most of the malicious content from being downloaded with the exception of a few downloads. ESET NOD32 also blocks such files by blocking the URL itself or getting rid of the file as soon as it is downloaded. The rate of success isn’t as high as Avast though.

It can detect most malwares as soon as you reach the directory containing them. It starts deleting them as soon it detects it and displays a popup notifying you about what it did. A single window displays multiple notifications and you can close them all at once if you want to. Some malwares that are not detected automatically might be detected when scanned manually or when they are launched.

They claim that this version of ESET NOD32 has an improved anti-phishing feature as well. They claim to have improved blocking of scam websites and the ones that serve potentially unwanted content. It was able to block some of the phishing sites that have been around for long but it wasn’t able to detect the new ones. Other antiviruses did a much better job of blocking such sites as compared to the ESET.

The antivirus interface is fast and simple. Also the full system scans don’t take as long as other antiviruses. A repeat scan of files doesn’t take long either as it doesn’t rescan files that have already been found to be safe. There are various standalone malware tools available on ESET’s website. Each tool dedicated to handle a specific family of malwares. This edition also adds a ‘specialized cleaner’ that is available in help and support tab. It automatically runs cleaners for Sireref and Conficker and they are planning to add more such cleaners to this tool.

You can also create bootable rescue CD to use in case the malware is preventing the virus scan or installation of antivirus. It has a built in diagnostic tool that can tell their tech support about the system state and help with the fix. It has a social media scanner which scans your facebook and twitter for dangerous links and lets you post a warning. So the ESET NOD32 antivirus is a smart tool which is really good at its job of keeping your system safe. It also comes with multiple useful bonus tools but the ant phishing tool leaves you asking for more. Overall it is a good choice if you are looking for a security tool.
