Motorola Looking to Revive Mobile Facility in India

According to reports, mobile handset vendor Motorola is planning on reviving its mobile facility in India. Motorola Mobility has been discussing on a proposal to restart manufacturing processes at its Chennai facility. The operations of this facility were terminated in March 2013, but since then, there has been a buzz of its revival. The general manager of Motorola Mobility, Amit Boni said that they’ll see whether local manufacturing will prove helpful for customers or not. He also added that presently, company is importing handsets from China, but still lot of analysis and assessment is going on for reviving the Chennai facility.

Motorola was the leading smartphone seller at the end of 2014, and has been planning to expand its range of smartphones and smartwatches in 2015. The company sold three million smartphones in 2014, out of which almost 80% of the sale came from the MOTO E and MOTO G smartphone series. Moreover, it was also mentioned that the second generation of MOTO E featuring 3G and 4G variants for Rs.6,999 and Rs.7,999 is also getting a terrific response from the Indian market.

He also highlighted the importance of ecommerce platform Flipkart and commented that the phone which has been selling at a price of Rs.13,000 at Flipkart would have been priced 2,000 or even 3,000 with traditional means of marketing and distribution. Flipkart has been a leader in the Indian ecommerce arena, and has successfully sold millions of Motorola smartphones till date. By mentioning the importance of price uniformity, Amit Boni mentioned the fact that several dealers selling smartphones at retail stores offer different prices to their customers, and leave them confused while making a purchase. Thus for the time being, it can be concluded that Motorola has not been planning on expanding its distribution channels via going into standard practice.

Moreover, as a part of its service offering, Motorola is also planning to start the ‘Care on wheels’ initiative. The general manager commented, “We started a pilot in Delhi to offer our customer services on the move. We would be replicating this service in 10 more cities.” Under this service, Motorola’s customer service van with trained personnel will be providing smartphone repair services to customers all around Delhi up to a period of 30 days after purchase.

The company plans on growing its sales this year, but as of now, nothing was revealed about the upcoming third generation of Moto G and Moto X series smartphones.
