The Google has launched its latest Android offerings in the market in the form of the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. The Android device lovers round the world rightfully eagerly wait for new products from the maker of Android itself, and this year Google certainly pleased all the Android lovers with not one, but launching a pair of new Nexus phones on 29th September 2015.

While LG is responsible for building the new Nexus 5X, the Nexus 6P has been manufactured by Huawei. As the Android marketplace is already super crowded by innumerable big mobile makers, one wonders how these two Nexus devices will fair in the space. However, one should not forget that they directly come from Google which is great plus for those gadget geeks who are more into the OS experience rather than other features.

Now comes the question which of these two can prove to be a better buy? Let us consider what all the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P offers and the difference between them to choose the right product according to particular requirements.

Design

The Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P are not radically different than their respective predecessors. However, these two phones have a big price difference between them which is also pretty apparent in their design and visual appeal.

The Nexus 6P is obviously the premium one among the two with premium looks that comes from an all metal built along with a Gorilla Glass 4 display, front stereo speakers and a fingerprint sensor at the rear. The horizontal lens housing of the rear camera might not be liked by all, but its overall design and appeal is sophisticated, sleek and solid befitting its price.

The more affordable Nexus 5X model does cost saving with plastic body with smooth feel much like its predecessor, though it has grown a bit and has also become sleeker in design. It also has a fingerprint scanner, but has single speaker and Gorilla Glass 3 screen. The 5X’s rear camera protrudes a bit from the device, but it certainly is not ugly.

The Nexus 5X comes in three color choices, while the Nexus 6P comes in four, although the 6P gold color is available in Japan only for now. The Nexus 6P is also the bigger phone.

Display

The Nexus 5X comes with a 5.2 inch display, while the Nexus 6P is the bigger one and flaunts a 5.7 inch display size making it more of a phablet.

The screen resolution is albeit different as well. The Nexus 5X features a Full HD display with a resolution of 1,080 x 1,920 at 424 ppi; while the Nexus 6P comes with a QHD display with 1,440 x 2,560 resolution and 515 ppi. The 6P’s display is sharper, more vivid and vibrant, while the 5X’s screen offers great brightness and superb viewing angles.

Software

The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P are manufactured by different companies – LG and Huawei respectively, but they are actually siblings coming from Google and thus these two siblings are the first smartphones in the market to offer the latest Android version 6.0 Marshmallow.

Thus, both the models should offer outstanding update support. Thus, here there’s no difference or compromises.

Camera

Both the new Nexus siblings come with 12.3 MP rear cameras, which are claimed to be very impressive in low light conditions owing to more light capturing large pixels. Both come with dual-LED flash, f/2.0 aperture lens and laser auto-focus without any difference. However, the Nexus 6P offers a 8 MP front camera, while the Nexus 5X offers a 5 MP front snapper.

Performance

Again both these new Nexus siblings should be great performers featuring high end processors. While the Nexus 5X gets powered by a 6 core Snapdragon 808 similar to the LG G4, along with the support of 2 GB of RAM, the Nexus 6P gets an 8 core Snapdragon 810 chipset, similar to the Xperia Z5 with the support of 3 GB RAM.

From the specs sheet, the new Nexus 6P seems to be the more powerful smartphone with a strong processor, 3 GB of RAM, and larger memory options. However, it didn’t feel much different than its smaller sibling the Nexus 5X when we tested them both briefly. Thus, the real difference can be told only after both the devices are used extensively.

Backup

The Nexus range has been always about software and performance and battery backup was never its strong point. The Nexus 5 from 2013 particularly was highly criticized for its failure to offer a wholesome backup for an entire day of work and play. However, these two new handsets are expected to offer much better battery life and erase the bad battery life name from the range.

The Nexus 5X packs in a 2,700 mAh battery pack which is better than the previous Nexus 5’s 2,300 mAh battery. The Nexus 6P will also be drawing its juice from a larger battery pack than its preceding model that is 3,450 mAh battery pack.

As the Nexus 6P’s display and resolution are larger than that of the Nexus 5X, its larger battery doesn’t necessarily translate in longer backup time among the two. In fact, we think both phones would offer almost same kind of battery life, though only extensive tests can confirm this.

Moreover, both the new devices will be benefitting from their latest Android Marshmallow OS which offers many battery optimization options which should improve the backup time as well. There’s the new Doze feature and the Type-C USB cable that offers faster charging.

Conclusion

The final decision is obviously in the buyers’ hands. If you can all for a bigger screen with better resolution, then the Nexus 6P is obviously the better option. This is also true if you are looking for a more premium design of course by paying a premium price.

If you wish to go for very capable, uncompromising and more affordable phone and don’t mind a bit smaller screen size and slightly lesser specs, then the Nexus 5X is definitely a superb choice.
