Russia is nothing for the United States or NATO to be afraid of. Their “Black Sea Fleet” isn’t at all impressive. They have one diesel submarine. The fleet’s main vessel is very dated and only able to do battle against other ships. They have only one, aging guided missile cruiser. They have only one cold-war era anti-submarine warfare cruiser.
Add to that their 2 frigates and various landing craft, and you end up with a fleet that could EASILY be destroyed by the Italian navy, let alone the raw power of the UK navy or the US navy.
Our American planes have better radar, missiles, and electronic warfare equipment than theirs.
Outside of the US, America has 598 military bases in 40 countries. Russia has a “presence” in Cuba (not a base) and 1 naval base in Syria.
America has 1.4 million active duty troops, Russia has 845,000 active duty troops, and their troops are not trained or equipped at the level of ours. Russia’s military may be good at bullying and intimidating their small neighbors, but against the US it would be completely ineffective. Russia cannot take on the US and it would be suicidal for them to try.

You were never aboard a B-52 on SAC alert as a civilian. You would have had trouble getting into a Buff on the regular flight-line without written authorization from the Bomb Squadron Commander.
