A definitive 20-year study into the effects of long-term cannabis use has demolished the argument that the drug is safe. Cannabis is highly addictive, causes mental health problems and opens the door to hard drugs, the study found.
The paper by Professor Wayne Hall, a drugs advisor to the World Health Organisation, builds a compelling case against those who deny the devastation cannabis wreaks on the brain. Professor Hall found:
- One in six teenagers who regularly smoke the drug become dependent on it,
- Cannabis doubles the risk of developing psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia,
- Cannabis users do worse at school. Heavy use in adolescence appears to impair intellectual development
- One in ten adults who regularly smoke the drug become dependent on it and those who use it are more likely to go on to use harder drugs,
- Driving after smoking cannabis doubles the risk of a car crash, a risk which increases substantially if the driver has also had a drink,
- Smoking it while pregnant reduces the baby’s birth weight.
Last night Professor Hall, a professor of addiction policy at King’s College London, dismissed the views of those who say that cannabis is harmless.
‘If cannabis is not addictive then neither is heroin or alcohol,’ he said‘It is often harder to get people who are dependent on cannabis through withdrawal than for heroin – we just don’t know how to do it.’
Those who try to stop taking cannabis often suffer anxiety, insomnia, appetite disturbance and depression, he found. Even after treatment, less than half can stay off the drug for six months.

Alcohol has killed 10,000 people since this morning. Weed has not been proven to have killed anyone directly. The gateway drug idea is total B.S. I have to say that I am very disappointed to see this article posted so uncritically on an alternative news website such as this.
There are a number of highly spurious pieces of information contained in this article. The first one that springs to mind is the ‘gateway drug’ argument. This is an argument that is widely dismissed as absolutely meaningless in the world of professional drug treatment. This is because there are many millions of people who use Cannabis recreationally without ever developing a hard drug problem, also, the basis of the gateway drug argument is that if you ask hard drug addicts if they have ever tried Marijuana they overwhelmingly have. Based on the same logic then, shall we ask the same addicts if they’ve ever tried cigarettes? Alcohol? Caffeine? White sugar? All of which are drugs and by the gateway logic should then be illegal…
Furthermore. Please look at the report on his own research (conducted at The University of Bristol) in to cannabis conducted by Professor David Nutt, the former UK Government Drug Czar who was sacked for sharing his honest opinion backed with rigorous research. He states that DESPITE what the research shows he could not be responsible for the PRE-EXISTING AGENDA OF THE BRITISH GOVERNEMENT. The UK Government tried to advance the argument that Cannabis causes various mental health disorders, BUT if you read the research rather than the government report on the research you will find that it actually says that in some cases of extremely heavy use in a person with a pre-existing mental health condition it MAY cause the issue to worsen. Apart from that, there is absolutely no evidence of Cannabis causing mental health problems.
In regards to it being ‘extremely addictive’, this is again a highly subjective interpretation. It is true that some people develop a psychological dependency on Cannabis, but this approximately proportional to the number of people who drink alcohol who then become alcoholics. The vast majority of people who use cannabis do so recreationally in much the same way as drinkers without serious adverse effects on their general life (ie an occassional hangover is an ‘acceptable’ effect of drinking). The ONLY drugs that are physically addictive are Heroin and Alcohol.
For the record, Professor Nutt concluded that if the benchmark for a drug being safe enough for legal consumption is alcohol and tobacco, then there is no doubt by any objective form of measurement that Cannabis should be legal. His conclusion was that the most harmful element of Cannabis consumption is the fact that the socially preferred method of use is smoking.
Another footnote for those who believe in prohibition. Portugal had the worst per capita rates of hard drug addiction in Europe at the turn of the millenium. Shortly after they decided to try a different tack, decriminalising possession of all drugs and making treatment as well as clean drugs and paraphernalia available through doctors. The result? The rates of addiction have dropped through the floor as without prohibition addicts are not criminalized for possession, don’t turn to crime to feed their addiction and are much less likely to become infected with HIV, Hepatitis etc. It is also worth remembering that the Netherlands, which has a traditionally liberal attitude to drug laws, also has one of the lowest rates of addiction to hard drugs in Europe.
Let us also remember that this information comes from the WHO, advancers of vaccines, dismissers of natural medicines and advocates of “pharmaceutical drugs are the only way… OK, rant over!!!
