Slavery Today Four Times Higher Than In the Past Centuries

According to a study, slavery has never been as prevalent and profitable as it is today. Forced labour earns $ 3,978 a year for each person exploited. It is estimated that at least 21 million people can be classed as slaves. 

Millions of more wretches suffer conditions similar to those endured by indentured slaves of past centuries. Circumstances and low wages leave unfortunates with no escape from appalling working conditions.

In many parts of the world, slavery is a certainty faced on a daily basis. According to the United Nations: “contemporary forms of slavery, trafficking in persons, forced prostitution, child soldiers, forced and bonded labour and use of children in the international drug trade, are widespread today, largely because of the helplessness exacerbated by poverty, discrimination and social exclusion.” 

Different sectors are highlighted in reports and surveys, and include such work as the extraction of foodstuffs at sources like chocolate and coffee, certain minerals, including those used in manufacturing electronic devices or the textile world.

According to figures made available by the International Labour Organization, 21 million people are classified as slaves. 

The Global Slavery Index puts even higher numbers at almost 46 million enduring slave conditions in 167 countries.  A better understanding of the magnitude of the tragedy is that between the 15th and the 19th century, the slave trade concerned 13 million people.

According to the study by Siddhart Kara, an expert on the topical issue, sexual slavery in many countries and especially Israel accounts for more than half the profits derived from modern slavery, yet the victims represent only 5% of slaves. 

In other areas, which are less publicised, women, men and children are also prey to this immense gulag system. Included are child militias, in begging or suffering forced marriage, organ trafficking, and the outright sale of children. Others are involved in construction and agriculture, among many others.  The profit derived for the dealers in misery is 25 to 30 higher than between the 18th and the 19th century.

For over 15-years Siddhart Kara interviewed more than 5,000 victims. The data he obtained surprised him. Exploiters like George Soros and political buccaneers on his payroll profit in particular from significant migratory flows and the many people in related distress. 

Many of the victims are uprooted people who are easily exploited. If nothing is done, the situation could get worse; with the proliferation of conflicts and climate change, people fleeing from combat zones and disaster-stricken cities find themselves in highly vulnerable situations.

However, insists Siddhart Kara says that for the fight to end slavery to be successful it requires political will and determination on the part of the international community and the nations most concerned. The expert, therefore, is unlikely to be optimistic about ending slavery.

To date, there are initiatives to reverse the phenomenon. In India, one of the countries most concerned by slavery, researchers and thanks to Google maps have launched a program to locate the factories and other places in which people are exploited. 

Most Westerners are blissfully unaware that indirectly profit they from slaves by purchasing goods at ‘too good to be true’ prices that they know to be the result of slavery. Consumers can oppose this by refusing the purchase of products manufactured by brands that work with sub-operators who infringe human rights. Like this story? Share it with a friend.
