United States 1922 Plain Lincoln Cent

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

In 1922 only the Denver Mint was responsible for producing Lincoln Cents. Both Mints were busy producing millions of Silver Dollars. No nickels, dimes, quarters, or half dollars were produced in 1922. Back in 1922, troubles at the U S Mint caused no Lincoln cents to be produced at the Philadelphia branch. They were all produced at the Denver mint, and hence they carried the usual ‘D’ mint mark below the date. Cent production was way down that year, so a regular 1922D Lincoln with the D mint mark is valuable today all by itself.

But something happened to a few of the dies (hard metal pieces with the coin pattern) in the striking machines. They were used and re-used so much, than the patterns became weak and mushy, so much so that the D mint mark disappeared all together. Voila! The 1922 no D cent.

Although counterfeiting is not the big thing plaguing the identification of this coin, telling apart the different examples is.
All 1922 Lincoln Cents were produced at the Denver Mint. The reason there is emphasis on the “No-D” or “Plain” is because although there is no mint mark, it was still produced at the Denver Mint. There are several dies that produced cents with little or no trace of the D mintmark visible. The pieces most valued by collectors are from the marriage designated as Die Pair 2. It is also commonly referred to as the Strong Reverse variety. Several diagnostic features will aid in confirming an example is not one of the three “Weak D” varieties or an altered coin.

Die Pair 2 may be identified in part by the total absence of any trace of the D mintmark. The second 2 in the date is clearly defined and strong. The digit 9 is somewhat mushy. The lower front portion of Lincoln’s coat is weak and shallow from the same heavy die polishing that effaced the mintmark from under the date. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST has a distinctive look as well. The letters of IN GOD are very mushy, even on uncirculated examples, and spread out toward the rim. The word WE is stronger and more clearly defined, but still has a decidedly worn appearance. There is an obvious and marked contrast between these first three words in the motto and the last, TRUST. Its letters are clearly defined and separated from the rim.
