Johnson Matthey Silver Bars minted by Sunshine?
Johnson Matthey is known for its high-quality precious metals — a name investors have learned to trust. Many people buying gold and silver look for the JM stamp on their coveted bars as a sign of quality and legitimacy. But, recent news relayed to Bernank might be having bullion collectors eyeing their JMs a little more closely.
A source has told Bernank that Sunshine Mint has teamed up with Johnson Matthey to produce a line of silver bullion products. Johnson Matthey is apparently supplying the silver, and Sunshine Mint is in charge of operating the presses.
This realization is qualified by the Provident website for the *NEW* 1 oz silver JM Bar:

SunShne Mint/Mine is “respected”, right alongside JM….JM is just “bigger” and “older” corporation.
ALL such mints or “refineries” are spot checked by “re-melting” of their “products” when demanded by a buyer.
ANY gross differences, between “claimed” or “stamped” purity vs that resulting from such a re-melt…bad news!.
Due to the upswing in demand from Asia/China, and their desire for “4-nines” purity in Kg bars, most of the really big refiners are back logged with work many months out…ie: booked solid…and, it is this business that is driving their profits – as they claim an “agreed” percentage of each process as their “fee”… being paid “in kind”, ie: in metal – but, not in sellable form (perhaps “near” 5,000 oz ingots??) – means they will build up stock piles of such metal and need to market it into end-users/collectors hands. Hence, a “deal” is made to “license” their good name (as the metal’s true source/purity guarantor) over to an also trusted name but smaller and less busy “shop”..
IF someone really has a problem with this…grab a few oz from 2 or 3 seller’s and re-melt it for a purity check. Publish your results.
In the USA/NA market, these will most likely be “3-nines” grade – not that hard to attain and hold during process. In fact, IF my feeling is correct…this metal many be 9999′s that will be marketed as 999′s as it was an “in kind” payment to JM for work/process performed.
I’ll be looking for the “premium” attached to these…JM has always enjoyed an advantage over Sunshine in the marketplace; as has Silvertowne… vs OPM/APEX/etc. At the moment, with the rapid movement in the market, these new/old premiums are somewhat muddied/mixed. However, I just saw the “new JM” 100oz bar for $1717, while OPM and RCM 100 oz were still at $1800 and $1820, and other sellers putting them “all together” around $1,800. The dynamics of this marketplace are changing at the speed of light…pay attention. and, good luck.
