Happily Natural is now entering it’s 7th year. Since 2003 we have promoted natural hair, social change, cultural awareness and holistic health. We can’t wait to see you this summer!

Happily Natural Day is an event that promotes love and pride in being of African descent. Festival attendees can particpate in workshops, lectures, shop in our african marketplace for one of a kind art, jewelry, body and haircare products & edutain themselves through the socially conscious messages delivered by artists from around the globe.

Happily Natural is also looking for high quality exhibits for it’s annual celebration taking place this August.

The Black Dollar is the foundation for the betterment of our communities. African Americans spend $744 billion dollars annually yet most of that amount is spent with ethnic groups other than our own. As a result, we remain dependent while European & Asian owned businesses profit daily from our pathology and lack of self-reliance. Our goal is the create a space were African can circulate dollars within their own community, a concept that is ever more important in these troubling economic times.

The Purpose of HND

The purpose of Happily Natural Day is to raise black awareness and cultivate unity & solidarity within the African community. Our goal is accomplished by using spoken word poetry & music along with lectures & workshops to transmit uplifting, educational, and socially conscious messages to the masses at large. Our festivals are always pro-community, and we have stayed true to course in supporting black institutions at each of our former & future celebrations. In 2003, our premiere was held at The Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia. In 2008 we have partnered with FTP & The Black August Organizing Committee to launch Happily Natural Day in Atlanta during Black August Weekend in addition to our annual Richmond VA celebration.

Happily Natural Day’s thematic and overall marketing aspect is targeted to the natural hair care industry & the conscious community of which we reach a target audience of African men & women ages 18 to 55. The utilization of natural hair care as a thematic has a multi-faceted benefit. First it opens a dialogue on one of the ever-present distresses caused by Post Traumatic Slave Disorder (PTSD) the inferiority complex as identified by psychologist Kenneth Clark and remarked on by Afrikan scholar warriors throughout history such as
Marcus Garvey, El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, Assata Shakur, and Llaila Afrika. Secondly, it allows the conscious community to inter-relate across regional divides, socioeconomic divides, ideological and age divides for the sole purpose of upliftment in a way that is innovative and ever-expansive in methods of application.

Though we promote natural haircare, Happily Natural is more than a hair show, and we do not promote Asian or Korean businesses, nor do we promote weaves, extensions or any products that promote a European standard of beauty.

Fusing music & lectures together we have taken two aspects of Afrikan culture that have always served as means to transmit information from the griots & kemetic priests of our ancestry to the Last Poets & Dr. John Henrik Clarke now, the spoken word has always served as a timeless method to re-iterate where we as a people should be going and what we should be doing to further progress in our community both inwardly and externally.
