Taxpayer Cost of Litter In Hamilton, Canada= $2.5 Million

Larry Di Ianni, as reported in the September 22, 2010 edition of the Spectator, says he wants people to be able to exceed the one bag limit for garbage over and above the current exceptions following New Year’s Day, Victoria Day and Thanksgiving. He says the one bag limit as it now stands “doesn’t make sense”.

Allegation: Larry Di Ianni says the city should be able to “increase the number of times that you might be able to put out multiple bags, while still adhering to the whole education of reducing so we don’t fill up our landfill, which is not good.”…

We’re running out of space for our garbage. We’re trying to maximize the narrowing capacity of Hamilton’s one-and-only operating landfill site. That means we must implement innovative solutions.

The people of Hamilton are committed to waste diversion and they are committed to reducing, reusing and recycling. In fact, so much so that Hamilton is experiencing a 99 per cent compliance rate which clearly demonstrates that the one-bag garbage program is working extremely well and Hamilton residents have adjusted well to the one-bag limit.

The City spends $2.5 million per year on litter remediation (also includes graffiti).  Waste that has been thrown at the roadsides has really nothing to do with the one-bag limit.  In fact, there is no evidence to support that. The roadside trash problem is related to illegal dumping that has been an issue for quite some time in Hamilton.  Again, there is no evidence to suggest that roadside trash is related to the one-bag limit.
