Camberwell Market Blogger Meet Supported by Nuffnang
Melbourne’s Camberwell Sunday Market is what some might call a flea market, and others a car boot sale, with close to 400 stalls selling an eclectic mix of vintage wares, antiques, pre-loved books, crafts, clothes, games, toys and more.
In the 8 years I have lived in this fine city, only twice have I browsed the largest and most iconic of trash and treasure markets, the second time being today.
After a call out to Melbourne bloggers, suggesting another thrifty shopping meet (the last one being an op shop meet in Windsor), generously supported by Nuffnang, a group of us braved the crowds at a reasonable hour on Sunday morning. Thankful for the sun after a predicted rain forecast as Camberwell Market is not undercover. Lesson one – save market days for dry weather, the thought of a rainy Camberwell Sunday Market wouldn’t be much fun.
I didn’t take a lot of photographs after the first stallholder told me not to. Lesson two – ask stallholders before taking photographs of their wares.
Dee, of Wild About Melbourne (who also runs Made ‘n Thornbury Market and Northern Regards Market) spotted a glass display cabinet filled with wonderful little handcut brooches made from vintage wooden rulers. After the stallholder told us he carved all brooches himself, he proceeded to tell us his secrets; where he sources his rulers (FYI car swap meets, who knew?!), and which of his brooches sell the most (FYI ladies heeled shoe). I chose the parrot, and Dee the car.
Fellow bloggers went home with homewares, clothes, a wooden toy, lego, flowers, pop art and more. We finished up our morning of market browsing with a lunch stop at My Other Brother, a great spot for refreshment and a chance to listen to the market’s live musical talent and entertainment.
Sunday’s market visit reignited my love for trash and treasure, giving reason to visit more often. Camberwell Market, I will be back! Thanks again to Nuffnang for supporting our blogger meet up. Blogging can be somewhat isolating at times, so it is nice to have the opportunity to meet with fellow writers face-to-face.
Before I sign off today, a quick shout out for fellow market goer Magdalena of The Craft Revival and her creative events happening in capital cities around the country with her new venture Unleash Creative. There are a few places left on her first Melbourne creative event happening in a few weeks, check out more here.
