Living In A Volkswagon Van: Living On The Cheap And Living Free (Video).
Cheap living…now that’s my kind of living right there! I don’t know about you but I personally love sustainable living of any kind and my goal is to transform to that kind of living situation. Gypsy Caravans, Volkswagon Van/Camper Van, RV, and Yurt all sound tantalizing to my ears and my bank account. If you love learning how to save money and want to change your living situation then this article is right for you!
I like the idea of living in something that moves, so today I’m going to share with you some tips that I found about living in a Volkwagon Van.
So…Why Should I Live in a Volkswagon Van and have people think I’m a stereotypical hippie?
1. It’s Cheap…If you shop around carefully you can probably get a second hand vehicle for less than $20,000. You’ll have to make some improvements based on your personal desires (if you want a shower or a fridge or good heating), but the initial investment is still incredibly low. Add to that the fact that you can sell your car, and you’re seriously in the green. Your utility bills (I mean gas) could be quite high, but since you’re now mobile, you can forget about paying for your internet connection and things like that. You can also use FreeCycle to its full effect and pick up a bunch of free stuff from a variety of locations (greenminimalism para 1).
2. No more useless junk! You will end up keeping the important things that can actually fit in your van. Lately, I have been scanning the items that I own and I have realized that I have WAY to many items that I don’t even need.
3. Everywhere is your HOME! You can live almost anywhere…
4. You can’t waste time! When you live in such a small space it usually has a good impact on your mental focus and getting things done.
5. You learn more about DIY/self-suffiency things! You become smarter while living on the cheap…bonus!
So, What Volkswagon Van Should I Get?
A very popular van for inhabiting is the VW Westfalia. From the outside, it looks like a regular vehicle you might see anywhere. Here is a picture below:
In this van the chairs in the back turn into a bed and it has a fridge, stove, and table inside.
Here is a cool fellow that looks like he is living the DREAM in the VW Westfalia:
Another picture of a cool fellow who is looking at a fridge in the VW Westfalia:
I really like the idea here:
So the question everyone wonders….How am I going to shower?
Well in the VW Westfalia their is a stove so you either heat up some water on the stove and have a sponge bath or when it’s warm you could get a portable bath tub like this one below:
or…you could get a gym membership and just bathe there.
Here is a video below of a spiffy fellow who lived in a VW Westfalia for 3 months and longer…:
This spiffy fellow is such an inspiration:
This spiffy fellow cracks me up! Awesome video!
If anyone has lived in a VW bus please comment below I would love to hear your story!
Stay groovy!
Sincerely,
Radical Rose

ah yes, im back.
No, But I do plan on living in a 78 Toyota Chinook and touring Mexico. It wsa a little more room but not much. I did buy a 7 gallon portable shower. Just fill with water and hand from a tree. $5.00 e bay. I wanted a Westfelia but the prices went up to much in the last year and a half. The biggest problem is going to be electric but in Mexico for $5.00 you park on someones driveway and get electric. We also have what is called an antenna which will pick up any wi fi signal within 2 KM and crack the wep code. Legal in Mexico not legal in the states ˆ$100.00. That is a bargain. Anyone interested find me through my profile.
Thank you so much for sharing!
Always excellent articles and very interesting…a totally new spin on things. Good work, Radical Rose! I always love your articles!
Does the VW Westfalia come with a free big bushy beard ?
I’d prefer something like a Ford Transit Van and carry a big Tipi in it ….and a Motorbike….and a Canoe on the roof
…is that asking too much ?
