Apotex Careers: Why Being Green Matters

In recent years, Apotex has taken a conscious approach towards “green” practices.  Obviously we want to achieve positive environmental results and derive financial efficiencies however this has also had an impact on employee engagement and on our ability to attract new recruits.  More frequently our recruiters are being asked questions related to the environmental programs at Apotex.  Apotex has been able to implement several environmental initiatives and programs that have helped us on our journey to becoming a more green company.  Some of these include: Implementing new waste and recycling programs that have helped to divert more materials away from the landfill such as:

1. “Bring Your Mug to Work” and “Waste Free Lunch” campaigns

2. Glass bottle recycling in our laboratories

3. Annual waste auditing to determine other waste streams to reduce

Due to the implementation of our waste programs and our increase in waste diversion, Apotex has been awarded the Silver Award from the Recycling Council of Ontario in both 2013 and 2014.

We also participate in Earth Week and Waste Reduction Week Programs. Annual activities are held for both of these events that help to communicate environmental initiatives to employees and to build employee engagement. Some of the activities that have been done include; tree planting, cafeteria games and displays and the formation of an Environmental Committee.

We also Publish Apo-Green, our company environmental newsletter that helps to keep employees informed about our programs and initiatives and what they can do to be more “green” both at work and at home. Apotex has established a committee of individuals that are interested in building some of the environmental programs and initiatives at Apotex. The committee has taken part in organizing Earth Week, Waste Reduction week, Toronto Region Conservation Authority’s Yellow Fish program and a Bike to Work Campaign.

In 2014, Apotex became a member with Partners in Project Green, a company that works with businesses in the Pearson eco-zone to help them develop their sustainability goals. Through this partnership, Apotex has taken part in the People Power Challenge, a contest that engages employees to build on their own environmental engagement.  We have also conducted an energy audit at one of our facilities and we are working to implement practical energy savings projects.

It is our belief that having a strong environmental program not only allows us to achieve our environmental goals, but also contributes in attracting the right employees to Apotex.
