Debunking The Oil Rain and A Possible Hurricane in the Gulf

An interesting CNN news clip.  It started out as a discussion of what a possible hurricane could do to the oil spill in the Gulf and took a quick turn when Meteorologist Karen Maginnis started debunking the popular “it’s raining oil” video on YouTube.

In fact, The Christian Science Monitor already published an aritcle on June 25 that “ [Oil] don’t recombine to form oil that can subsequently return as a component of rain drops.”  

Maginnis also noted that it is impossible for oil to form in rain drop form due to its much heavier molecular structure.  Of course, she was promptly cut off, since apprarently, the show host–Rick Sanchez –thinks it is really raining oil in Louisiana.          

In the clip; however, Maginnis did manage to point out the “preferred scenario” would be for the storm to head to northern Florida. That’s because the oil spill has been gradually rotating counterclockwise. If the storm heads to the east of it, it would send the oil farther out to sea.

Meanwhile, CNN reports that over a wider area while storm surges could wash more oil ashore, according to a fact sheet prepared by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.  However, as of this writng, it is still not clear whether the storm could hit the part of the Gulf affected by the massive oil spill.
