Contractors and other personnel are heading away from ocean-based oil blow out clean up operations, as a potential hurricane makes clean up operations hazardous.

Some 68 days after the well blew out, the record breaking gusher is still not contained. Numerous theories of how oil travels in the subterranean depths, and the formation of oil, lead one to believe that this may be something other than a normal oil deposit.
The massive pressure at the well head have some experts concluding that Deep Water Horizon sat atop a major artery of newly created oil. The proponents of the abiotic oil theory believe that oil is created by geological processes deep within the earth, not necessarily by dead plant matter.
Nevertheless, the end result is what has environmentalists, government officials and public health officials concerned. The geyser of oil and the dispersants used to break up the spill are polluting the ocean and bayous, contaminating and killing fish and sea life, and spewing carcinogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air as far as the wind can carry them.
Many of these evaporated petroleum and crude oil by-products are carcinogenic, and damage chromosomes and lungs. The psychological damage of loss of income, loss of employment, contaminated work and living enviroments are one element of the equation. The post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) that often follows exposure to crude oil is another.
Now, an approaching hurricane and the advent of the hurricane season compound the crisis. Gale force winds, with the possibility of these winds driving the oil deeper into the heart of Gulf Coast states is a real and frightening danger.
“God forbid if we have another (Hurricane) Katrina, we’ll be picking oil off Bourbon Street” in New Orleans, Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said during a tour of Louisiana’s Barataria Bay off Grande Terre Island. (Reuters)
