Armed services are urged to stock kitchens with Gulf seafood

Published: Tuesday, December 07, 2010

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, who doubles as President Barack Obama’s point man on Gulf Coast oil spill recovery, is pressing America’s armed services to consume as much Gulf seafood as possible.

Navy Capt. Beci Brenton said Monday that Mabus has talked with Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and the secretaries of the Air Force and Army, and his staff has talked to the Defense Commissary Agency, which operates a worldwide chain of stores for military personnel, making the point “that we should be buying Gulf Coast seafood.”

In a meeting Monday with Ewell Smith, executive director of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, Mabus reaffirmed his commitment to using the tools at his disposal to help the Gulf seafood industry recover from the damage the BP oil spill has done in reality and perception. The board is gearing up for a large-scale national marketing campaign, with $30 million in BP money and millions more in federal dollars, to reassure restaurants and markets across the country that Gulf seafood is safe.

“He expressed what we wanted to hear: He is in favor of the federal government buying seafood from the Gulf,” said Smith, who said he would like to see Gulf seafood as the choice throughout the public domain, “whether it’s the military or prison systems or school systems.”

Gulf States Urge Feds to Buy More Gulf Seafood

December 7, 2010

An economic recovery-minded coalition of government and business representatives from the Gulf states are urging the federal government to purchase more Gulf seafood — and they recently met with U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus in Washington, D.C., to make their case.

The Gulf Coast Ready 4 Takeoff Coalition is a group of leaders from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. They met this week with Secretary Mabus, who serves as President Barack Obama’s point man on Gulf Coast oil spill recovery.

The coalition would like to see Gulf seafood as the choice throughout the public domain, “whether it’s the military or prison systems or school systems,” says Ewell Smith, executive director of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board.

“We liked what we heard from Secretary Mabus,” Smith says. “Without being solicited, he said, ‘The seafood from the Gulf is the safest in the world.’ He also said he’d sent a letter to branches of the military encouraging them to buy and eat Gulf seafood.”

Gulf Coast Leaders Ask Feds to Buy Seafood in Bulk

Dec. 15, 2010

Local leaders in the Gulf Coast region have put together a proposal that calls for the federal government to purchase millions of pounds of seafood from the Gulf of Mexico to be served at U.S. military bases and prisons.

As reported by John Fritze, writing for USA Today, it’s the latest effort to bolster the Gulf economy, which is still reeling from this summer’s oil spill.

Three months after BP sealed the deepwater well, a group of civic leaders from the affected area is pushing for an economic stimulus package for the Gulf area that includes, among other ideas, increasing demand for Gulf seafood by having the government buy shrimp and other fish in mass quantities.

It would be a great way to keep fishermen working, says Ewell Smith of the Louisiana Seafood and Marketing Board. Smith is one of those lobbying for the proposal. It would also help get the message across to the American consumer that Gulf seafood is safe to eat, the group believes. For many, the perception remains that Gulf seafood still somehow tainted from the spill–and it’s that perception that’s stalling the region’s recovery.

The business and government coalition, known as Ready 4 Takeoff, met last week with Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, the former Mississippi governor who…Continue…foodchannel.com

Military Consumption of Gulf Seafood One Way to Boost the Market

January 12, 2011 by The Berniard Law Firm

The Gulf Cost seafood industry continues to struggle to rebuild after the BP oil spill. The industry faces a conundrum in its efforts to recover from the disaster; both supply and demand is uncertain. Although the number of fishers back in the water has risen in the past month, only 40 to 50 percent of the fleet is back on the job. This has been partially blamed on the uncertainties surrounding the claims process being administered by Kenneth Feinberg, with others pointing the finger at continuing market concerns among fishers.

Fortunately, the industry has support from federal government agencies including the Navy and the White House. In addition to government support, BP has pledged $30 million to the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board to finance a three year campaign to promote gulf seafood. Ensuring safety of Gulf seafood and providing a steady supply to consumers are two methods promoters hope will help the industry recover.

On Monday December 6, Ewell Smith, executive director of the Louisiana Seafood Promotion and Marketing Board, met with Navy Secretary Ray Mabus. Mabus is President Obama’s point man on the Gulf Coast oil spill recovery, and is encouraging America’s armed services to consume as much Gulf seafood as possible. Smith met with Mabus as a representative of the Gulf Coast Ready 4 Takeoff Coalition, an alliance of businesses and government entities from Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida working for economic recovery in the Gulf.
