We have often heard that artificial sweeteners and certain food additives such as monosodium glutamate (MSG) are bad for our health but has much of this information actually made a difference as to how our children are being fed by their own parents and their schools? I would say not as there isn’t a day that goes by that I do not see otherwise caring Mums feeding their children sugar-free drinks and MSG-loaded crisps and snacks.

 

As I am sure many of you are already aware, there are deadly chemicals widely available in unlimited amounts (in most countries) in food products including foods that are specifically aimed at children. More importantly these products are widely used by playgroups, parents, schools, and nurseries under the false belief that it is actually good for the children. The last part of that sentence is where the real concern lays. Parents, teachers, and catering staff are all thinking that they are doing the right thing and giving the children what they understand to be the best for them.

 

And the reasoning behind this is simple. There is so much bad publicity about sugar so much so that consumers are completely scared away from sugared products, and quite rightly so as sugar is toxic to us. However, clever mass-marketing by huge corporations has taken advantage of this and pointed everyone in the direction of artificially sweetened products using sweeteners that they manufacture rather than letting people naturally choose healthier products such as pure juices and natural squashes/cordials. It is so unfortunate that people (including many healthcare professionals) believe this fallacy, and continue to do so with such conviction that no one can seem to get through to them at all. But what they are doing is believing the car salesman when he tells them the car he is selling is mechanically sound without asking an unbiased mechanic to clarify this. And to make matters worse, they are doing this with their own health and the health of their children!

When I try to advise people of the dangers, the usual response is If it were that bad, they wouldn’t allow it in our food in the first place. But this, too, is a fallacy. Just because something was once approved does not make it right, especially when new evidence has been discovered since the approval of these substances even smoking was once approved and even considered to be healthy! And furthermore, many were approved in suspicious circumstances in the first place we will look at how aspartame became approved in just such a fashion a little later.

 

No Artificial Sweetener Is Safe

 

The fact of the matter is there is (to date) no artificial sweetener that has actually been proven to be safe to consume. In fact, many have been proven to cause tumors and cancer with prolonged usage. Small quantities of these additives used in controlled amounts may be considered safe by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but the fact that sweeteners are now included in the ingredients of so many foods, including prescribed medicines, health foods, and drinks even those with sugar in them means that it can accumulate in our system and build up to levels that will be harmful, especially to children, pregnant and nursing mothers, the elderly, and those with compromised immunity.

 

Sucralose has been linked to obesity, aborted pregnancies, anaemia, increased sugar cravings, digestive problems/conditions, migraines, and seizures. Acesulfame K has been linked to kidney tumors, and is usually found alongside another sweetener as part of a toxic sweetener blend. However, the most dangerous sweetener of all and the one to be concentrated on here is Aspartame.

 

And Aspartame May Be the Worst

 

To first understand why Aspartame is on the market and in our foods, it is necessary to understand how it got there in the first place. It was discovered by accident in 1965 when James Schlatter, a chemist of G.D. Searle Company, was testing an anti-ulcer drug. In 1981, aspartame was approved by the FDA for dry goods; this was followed in 1983 when with its approval for carbonated beverages.

 

Originally, it was approved for dry goods on July 26, 1974; but neuroscience researcher Dr. John W. Olney and consumer attorney James Turner filed objections in August 1974. This combined with government investigations into G.D. Searle’s research practices caused the FDA to put the approval of aspartame on hold on December 5, 1974. The day after Ronald Reagan’s inauguration (January 21, 1981), Donald Rumsfeld, the CEO of Searle and the main financier to Ronald Reagans election campaign, re-applied to the FDA for approval to use Aspartame as a food sweetener. Reagans new FDA commissioner, Arthur Hayes Hull, Jr., saw that it became approved.  In 1985, Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle and made Searle Pharmaceuticals and The NutraSweet Company separate subsidiaries.

 

Aspartame is made of 3 ingredients: 50% Phenylalanine + 40% Aspartic Acid + 10% Methanol = Aspartame.  Lets look at these ingredients more closely.

 

Phenylalanine Phenylalanine is an amino acid normally found in the brain. Consuming phenylalanine is particularly dangerous for anyone with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria (PKU) as they cannot metabolize it. This leads to dangerously high levels in the brain, which sometimes prove to be fatal and is the reason why products with aspartame must include on their labels the warning contains a source of phenylalanine. Consuming Aspartame, especially with carbohydrates, has been shown by human studies to lead to excess levels of phenylalanine in the brain even in people who do not have PKU; and, furthermore, these levels were found to be relative to how much Aspartame had been consumed over time. These excessive levels of phenylalanine in the brain have been shown to decrease the levels of serotonin in the brain, leading to emotional disorders such as depression.

 

Aspartic Acid Aspartic acid is an excitotoxin. Dr. Russell L. Blaylock, a professor of neurosurgery at the Medical University of Mississippi,  (now retired) shows in his book Excitotoxins The Taste That Kills that the neuro-toxic potential of substances such as MSG and aspartame is so overwhelming that it can no longer be ignored. Excitotoxins are substances added to foods and beverages that literally stimulate neurons to death, causing brain damage of varying degrees. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of scientific studies and test results now available that show how excessive excitatory amino acids such as aspartic acid in our food supply are causing serious chronic neurological disorders and many other acute symptoms.

 

Methanol - Methanol/wood alcohol is a deadly poison and is the substance that has killed or blinded many alcoholics. During digestion the methyl group of Aspartame causes methanol to be released in the small intestine. This process is greatly sped up when Aspartame is heated above 30oC, which can happen either through cooking, putting it in hot beverages, or incorrect storage. In addition, animal testing of methanol (or therefore Aspartame) cannot be an accurate indication of its effect on humans as humans lack some key enzymes, so we are many times more sensitive to the toxic effects of methanol than animals.

 

So we can deduce from this that: 50% Phenylalanine + 40% Aspartic Acid + 10% Methanol = 100% toxic!

 

Additionally, many believe that when we metabolize Aspartame, DKP (Diketopiperazine) is produced and this has been linked to reoccurring brain tumors. Although it has not absolutely been determined that DKP is produced after Aspartame ingestion, it is true that DKP is formed in Aspartame containing liquids during prolonged storage.

 

Numerous Adverse Events

 

It may not be a surprise to you after reading this information that Aspartame accounts for over 75% of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these 92 documented reactions are very serious including seizures, tumors, and death, with many common childhood problems such as ADHD symptoms, sleep problems, and lack of concentration also being associated with Aspartame consumption. Additionally, according to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by its ingestion: Brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, Parkinsons disease, Alzheimer’s, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes.

 

Additives by law must either be inert or non-reactive. Inert products do not produce a list of 92 documented symptoms from four types of seizures to coma and death, nor necessitate a 1038-page medical text. (Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic, by H. J. Roberts, M.D.) Nor would consumers using this product need to be detoxed, as set forth in “What To Do If You Have Used Aspartame” by neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, M.D.           

 

Our Campaign

 

With the backing of such a large and powerful (and corrupt) corporation such as Monsanto, there is little we can do to take this dangerous substance off the market in the short term and it is unrealistic for anyone to think that it will happen quickly. However, what we can do is spread awareness to people so they can decide whether to keep buying and feeding this to themselves and their families. The more that these items are left on the shelves of supermarkets, unpurchased and approaching their expiration dates, the better the message will get through that we do not want to have this poison in our food chain, and maybe we will have long-term victory after all!

 

In the United Kingdom, we have recently launched a campaign called Additives Awareness & Action, or AAA, in which we are acting to raise awareness about the many dangers in consuming harmful additives, especially artificial sweeteners.

 

There are two parts to our Campaign. The first is trying to get the message across to consumers to Read the Labels so everyone knows exactly what they are feeding themselves and their children. We are doing this by distributing flyers and posters, a downloadable version is available on our UK website or you may request some by contacting us. These flyers are being sent out already and we hope that many parents and other concerned adults across the UK will join us in spreading the word.

 

As a mother of three children, I know how difficult it is to find products that do not contain anything harmful. My shopping trips that were once an hour long became a few hours at one point as I was reading each label! This exercise really makes you realize just how many of our regular foods contain harmful ingredients. But you soon get to know which brands to completely avoid, which in turn reduces your food choices to just a few products then at least there is less time taken in reading the labels. Finally you can go shopping with confidence as you now have your list of trusted brands but then one day I am handing a bottle of Fruit Shoot to my daughter and saw they have started putting Aspartame in it!! This is how I learned how important it is to keep checking those labels regularly!

 

The second part is SOS Sweeteners Outta Schools. We feel it is imperative that products containing artificial sweeteners and especially Aspartame are not given to our children by establishments such as schools, nurseries, and playgroups where the parents have no control over what is given to their children during the times when they are in their care.

 

To join our campaign, please visit the UK website where you will find downloadable letters and fact sheets that you can send to your local schools, education authorities and anywhere else you would like to send them. The more people who do this, the more successful this campaign will be in alerting everyone to this danger.

 

Our Campaign can make a difference, big or small. The way we have run this Campaign is to encourage everyone to take back their own power by educating themselves and giving them back their freedom of choice. We feel this may be a more effective approach than fighting for a ban, which would just end up being paid off or infiltrated in some way. There is so much more that is compromising our health; but if we can at least have food that is not laced with poison, we may well be able to build up our immunities to withstand some of the other toxic insults to our bodies that we are subjected to that are quite often beyond our control.

“The NOAEL and ADI of aspartame are WRONG:

 The EFSA is currently panicking and putting out all kinds of misinformation, about why they are being told by the European Commission they MUST have a “full review of the safety of aspartame”. This is strange in its self since it was only in May 2010 that EFSA concluded a 2 year review on the safety of aspartame and their national experts recommended that it was safe? However, the AF delegates at the 36th AF meeting did not agree with their own experts and did not ratify their recommendation, they deferred any further discussion until the results of the Hull pilot study ave been announced later in 2011 – so what has prompted this urgent review now? in a word METHANOL. They are covering up new evidence that we The “UK Aspartame Awareness Campaign”(UKAAC)passed to the FSA and EFSA in October 2009 and in March 2011 to the effect that due to the the 10% methanol content of aspartame the ADI is 35 times too high, and the NOAEL on which it is based is WRONG – If a 70kg man consumed the methanol content of the NOAEL (400mg/kg)it would probably Kill him. note: the acute lethal dose of methanol in man is 343mg/kg. We are calling for an immediate independent review of the NOAEL and ADI of aspartame which includes its 10% methanol. The full review the EFSA wants to take 13 months to complete is a total waste of time if the NOAEL and ADI are incorrect – to check these will take all of 20 minutes. This post is from the UK so how will it affect Americans? the US ADI for aspartame is 50mg/kg which is 25% higher than the UK our calculations show that for the last 30 years your have all been consuming aspartame at a level 44 times higher than is safe – Professor Andrew Renwick has these details.”

On the methanol issue a new book is soon to be published by Dr. Woodrow Monte, “While Science Sleeps”.  Dr. Monte is author of the peer reviewed journal article, “Aspartame: Methanol and the Public Health”. 

I’m delighted to see in this article the SOS (Sweeteners Outta School!).   This report will help the effort, articles by experts on what aspartame does to the brains of our children:  Report for Schools:  http://www.mpwhi.com/report_on_aspartame_and_children.htm  Since this was written we have finally been able to find the two  teratology studies the FDA found so damning, admitting aspartame causes birth defects, that they sealed them, and removed them from the Bressler Report, so the public would never know.  Meantime autism became epidemic and Dr. Bill Deagle told me his environmental organization met with the European Environmental Organization, Dr. Rae and the Dallas Clinic in Oct 2010 and said that by the year 2013 that no child would be born in the western world that didn’t have some version of autism.  He said this was due to aspartame, MSG, fluoride and degradation and no doubt vaccinations.  Aspartame is an adjuvant, an immune stimulator, like the Squalene in the Anthrax vaccine.  Adjuvants all cause the same things according to neurosurgeon Dr. Russell Blaylock.  This is why you see so much MS, lupus, ALS, autism, etc. 

In a conversation with Jerome Bressler, author of the Bressler Report, after he retired from the FDA, http://www.wpwhi.com/complete_bressler_report.pdf. over a decade ago,  he pleaded with me to find those studies and add them back to his report along with the name of the scientist whose name had also been stricken.  Doctors H. J. Roberts and Russell Blaylock also spoke with him.  He said the people had the right to know otherwise they would use aspartame when pregnant and not know it causes birth defects.  This is what the USA FDA kept from the public.
Thanks to Dr. Madelon Price who went through thousands of Dr. John Olney’s records the two studies were found.  He had been able to get them from Freedom of Information years ago.  You will note they are added back in the Complete Bressler Report above.  Lane Shore, Mission Possible Chicago, who became a friend of Bressler and visited him often brought the complete report to him before his death.  Even  dying in a nursing home Jerome Bressler told  people there “don’t use aspartame, its poison”. 

The Denmark Study has now shown that aspartame jumps preterm births up to 78%.  Parliament and the EU certainly have every right to be concerned, especially since almost 100% of “independent and unbiased” scientific peer reviewed studies show aspartame to be unsafe and it was only marketed through the political chicanery of  Don Rumsfeld.  In England it was marketed through a business deal without anyone knowing.  Parliament had a big blowout and the story was in the Guardian.  No studies were done in the UK!  You cannot take a poison and get it to show safety.  Searle was caught, of course, in original studies which is why the FDA back then tried to have them indicted for fraud when both US Prosecutors were hired by the defense team and the statute of limitations expired.  Today the FDA gets over half its income  from Big Pharma, admits they are their customer, and are  Big Pharma’s Washington Branch Office.  As FDA toxicologist, Dr. Adrian Gross, told Congress on the approval of aspartame, “If the FDA violates its own laws who is left to protect the public?”  We have no protector which is  why there  are so many consumer organizations  like Mission Possible Intl working free the world over to alert you.  Now welcome Danielle Bryant, Wales Executive Director of NHF. 

Much work is now going on in the UK on aspartame and more and more are getting involved.    Here in the US we have been fighting for decades.  Today we are even fighting to save vitamins and herbs which Big Pharma would like FDA to remove.  The National Health Federation is the only organization of its kind who has a full time lobbyist in Congress working to prevent this.  Be sure to check out their web site and subscribe.  You will also get  great quarterly  magazines with articles like this.

Remember that aspartame is not just something bad for you, but a deadly chemical poison, once listed with the pentagon in an inventory of prospective biochemical warfare weapons submitted to Congress.  You will find this information in the Ecologist, 2005 and in  NutraPoison by Alex Constantine on www.mpwhi.com and www.dorway.com   and other web sites.  The Trocho Study which shows the formaldehyde converted from the free methyl alcohol embalms living tissue also shows it damages DNA.  When you damage DNA you can destroy humanity.  I visited Dr. Alemany in Barcelona who told me, “Betty, aspartame will kill 200 million”.   Dr. James Bowen who has ALS from aspartame told the FDA that it should not only be removed but all involved should be criminally prosecuted.  When the FDA called me and I mentioned that people are sick and dying all over the world I was told, “So what, we need to depopulate”.  So it’s up to the public, the FDA doesn’t care.  Imagine them sealing the two teratology studies from the Bressler Report knowing women would use it during pregnancy and have birth defects.  What an abomination!

Aspartame and G. D. Searle were sold to Monsanto in 1985.  In 2000 Monsanto sold its sweetener ingredient business including NutraSweet to J. W. Childs Equity Partners in Boston.  It sold its equity interests in two European Joint Venture Companies, NutraSweet, A. G. and Euro-Aspartame, S.A. to Ajinomoto which today is the largest owner of aspartame.  Monsanto also sold its table top sweetener business to Merisant which is a group of Monsanto managers.  They went bankrupt in 2009 but have now come out of it.  Remember that Neotame is also on the market and the FDA has ignored a Freedom of Information request asking if this is allowed unlabeled.  Stuart Pape of the National Yogurt Association has petitioned the FDA to allow aspartame in yogurt, milk and dairy products without labeling.  Jerome Bressler told me this is against the law because it requires a PKU warning.  Yet, under FOIA the FDA has still refused to give me an answer.  They simply ignore what they don’t want to answer just as they have ignored a citizens petition for ban filed about 9 years ago and an imminent health petition in 2007 that was required by their own  law to be answered in a week or 10 days. 

Important to know they have changed the name of aspartame to AminoSweet which is very deceptive since its the free methyl alcohol that sweetens the poison.  The European E number is E951.  Other names NutraSweet, Benevia, Canderel, NutraTaste, Spoonful, etc.   There is one sweetener that it not artificial but made from organic food, Just Like Sugar, www.justlikesugarinc.com that can be used.  Russell Blaylock, M.D., wrote in the Blaylock Wellness Report:  “Finally a safe sweetener”.  It is now in over 50 countries.

Get involved and save a life today!  Aspartame and MSG ( www.truthinlabeling.org) are many times hidden in artificial and natural flavors and to avoid it you just about have to eliminate processed foods.  Aspartame has a synergetic and additive effect with MSG.  As Dr. H. J. Roberts, world expert, says:  “When in doubt throw it out!”
