US FDA Approves AcceleDent System for Accelerated Orthodontic Treatment

6 December 2011 – Late this second half of November, the US Food and Drug Administration has cleared a new technology called AcceleDent, a removable appliance meant to be worn by people wearing braces for 20 minutes every day to accelerate the orthodontic treatment.

OrthoAccel Technologies Inc., maker of the removable apparatus, is prepping the product for launch across the States. Along with recent clear braces developments like Invisalign and Six Month Smiles, AcceleDent is expected to result in great advances in contemporary orthodontic treatment.

The device is removable, non-invasive, and is meant to be worn for less than half an hour (initial recommendations state about 20 minutes) each day. It is supposed to hasten the process of teeth movement that conventional braces are supposed to perform over long periods of time. Major acceleration in teeth movement has been observed during trial tests of the product, with up to 106% acceleration rates in some tests. Better yet, the use of the apparatus showed no signs of any negative impacts or side effects.

The finding and the product are significant because of how contemporary conventional orthodontic treatment works. This translates as a developmental success for both patients and orthodontists, whose common goal is to correct the problems as efficiently and speedily as possible.
