Diets of Expecting Mothers May Cause Diabetes in Children

Recent research from the Medical Research Council Toxicology Unit at the University of Leicester, UK determined that what a mom-to-be eats during pregnancy will have an impact on how her child ends up storing fat and may make the child more prone to type 2 diabetes.

The research shows that individuals who have a poor diet in the womb are less able to store fats normally in later life.  Storing fats normally, in the right areas of the body, is important because the alternative is accumulation in places like the liver and muscle where they possibly lead to disease.

“Although this might seem obvious to some, what the researchers found was that a low-protein diet during pregnancy might result in offspring less likely to get fat,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new books TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust(April 2011, BSH) and The TurboCharged Mind (January 2012, BSH). “However, the child’s cells will probably end up storing any excess calories as fat in places like the liver and other organs—i.e., visceral fat—which is a less obvious but very serious risk factor for numerous metabolic problems and chronic diseases.”
