A Secret About Roadblocks On The Path To Health

It’s said that into every life, a little rain must fall. Likewise, into any positive life change, a few roadblocks are bound to pop up and steer you momentarily off course. These roadblocks are the places in your journey where you slow down, step on the brakes and adjust your direction. Sometimes, you’ll need to stop and go back a little way. Other times, you’ll simply need to hit the gas and break through your roadblocks. (You daredevil, you!) From small potholes to huge “detour” signs, roadblocks are inevitable landmarks on the path to a balanced life. It is what you do in the face of those roadblocks that determines how and when you reach our destination. The secret? The roadblocks are the path.

You might believe that your roadblocks are just external factors such as lack of time, lack of support from loved ones or insufficient financial resources, but this is not the case. External factors never have the power to keep you from achieving what you truly want to accomplish, even though you might believe with all your being that external causes are responsible for what’s lacking in your life. In reality, external factors are nothing more than a manifestation of where you are internally. What you believe to be true about your life, yourself and the world comes true, because your actions reflect your beliefs. If you believe you don’t have enough time, you don’t. More importantly, if you believe you don’t deserve the time, support or resources to do what you want to do, you won’t invite these things into your life—and you’ll stay conveniently stuck. Ready for the secret?

Roadblocks are the stories you tell yourself.

For many, this is a difficult pill to swallow. Instead of being able to externalize your frustration with life, blaming circumstances and people, the responsibility for your life suddenly rests squarely on your own shoulders. You may resist this idea, perhaps very strongly. But the truth is that resistance, blaming and fear keep you inactive and hinder your growth. They may seem to keep you safe, but they actually insulate you from a world that is full of the experiences you truly desire and deserve. Until you become willing to get outside your comfort zone and move past your roadblocks, the bounty of the world will remain just out of reach. So while you may at first resist this idea—and that’s perfectly natural and understandable—try looking at it with a sense of possibility. If you are fully responsible for the current state of your life, because you created it from the inside out with your thoughts and beliefs, wouldn’t it stand to reason that you can now change those thoughts and beliefs and…change your life?

Roadblocks are helpful because they point out where you need to direct your focus. Just like bright orange traffic barrels with flashing lights, roadblocks point out structural inconsistencies in your thinking patterns. You might prefer to ignore these weak spots, but if you address them in the safe, supportive environment of 123 Feel Better, you might just prevent a messy accident somewhere down the line.

Bringing your self-defeating beliefs to the surface means you can acknowledge them and then move forward. The goal is not to point out all the ways that you are wrong. The goal in searching out your roadblocks—your automatic thoughts and your deeper core beliefs—is to give you greater freedom. When you don’t know about the underlying roadblock thoughts that are getting you off track, there is very little you can do to make lasting positive change.
