“Scientists discover meditation fortifies brain against cognitive diseases,” read the recent headline. Yet the article revealed Texas Tech University researchers merely discovered what ancient Chinese Masters knew some 5,000 years ago: certain meditative techniques fortify the brain against damaging diseases and the effects of aging, boost the intelligence, and sharpen analytical processes.

As taught by the Akashic, “Eastern cultures have always held that reality extends far beyond the domain of the senses.”

The scientists’ findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, reveal that an ancient form of disciplined mind-body training strengthens and increases the brain-signaling connections. What is even more important, the protective fatty tissue called myelin that shields the nerves from damage actually increased.

That protective substance can help reduce the risk of acquiring debilitating brain diseases such as Alzheimers and dementia.

The specific Chinese meditative technique used in the study is Integrative body-mind training (IBMT). Doctors Yi-Yuan Tang of Texas Tech and Michael Posner of the University of Oregon led the research.

While Tang is enthusiastic about the evidence of actual brain matter reinforcement from IBMT meditation, and sees applications to “improve or prevent serious mental disorders” and diseases, other brain researchers believe that the entire brain improves from IBMT including overall intelligence.

Posner explained that “This study gives us a much more detailed picture of what it is that is actually changing. We did confirm the exact locations of the white-matter changes that we had found previously. And now we show that both myelination and axon density are improving. The order of changes we found may be similar to changes found during brain development in early childhood, allowing a new way to reveal how such changes might influence emotional and cognitive development.”

The scientists also measured a significant drop in hormones related to stress and a general boost in elevated moods offsetting. They reported a measurable drop in anxiety, depression, anger and fatigue within the experimental group.

Pillar Two: Brain energy food

Much has been written about foods that energize the brain and enhance clarity of thought. Thousands of years of experimentation, use, and observation has identified as many as ten that work better than any other. Incorporating these foods into the diet will help improve thought, fuel the brain, and empower its functions. Several of the best are listed below.

Foods with Omega-3 fatty acids have long been known to be brain foods. Natural sources of fatty acids are salmon, walnuts and flax seeds.

The key to Omega-3 fats are EPA and DHA. They’ve been proven to reduce anxiety and depression. Since brain matter’s composed of nearly two-thirds of fat in the form of EPA and DHA, both are helpful in reducing episodes of anxiety and depression.

Antioxidants also help prevent the brain from deteriorating over the years and studies have shown they can literally supercgarge the memory. Berries are one of the richest natural sources of antioxidants and among them blueberries are the best.

Dark chocolate has become a health fad, but there’s a good reason why: many of its qualities are extremely beneficial to the body, including the abundance of bioflavinoids in the chocolate bean. It also is usually processed with lecithin, another great brain food, and is very high in vitamin E that supports the brain and has been linked to significant cognitive support in later years.

Avacados are also loaded with good fat, in this case the monosaturated kind. This kind of fat helps improve the blood flow in the circulatory system and strengthens blood vessels. Working to efficiently supply the brain with oxygen helps provide the basis for good brain health that everything else builds upon.
