8 Drug-Free Remedies to Improve Your Mental Health

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Let’s face it, we live in an overprescribed society where any case of the blues or ouchies is subject to a mental health screening and pill push. Doctors are quick to prescribe drugs, and patients are quick to take them without trying alternative treatments first, which can result in drug dependence and further health problems. Instead of popping a pill when you’re stressed or having a bad day, try one or all of these eight drug-free remedies to improve your mental health.

Exercise:

Exercise can be just as beneficial for the mind as it is for the body. Not only do jogging, cycling, weightlifting, and other forms of exercise allow you to clear your mind and reduce stress, but they also increase endorphins, the feel-good chemicals that improve your mood and promote a sense of well-being. Find exercises that make you happy and do them on a daily basis to ward off stress, anxiety, and diseases.

Meditation:

One of the best ways to relax your mind and reduce stress is to meditate. Meditation can have a significant impact on your brain’s ability to overcome stress and may reduce the negative side effects associated with stress, mild depression, and anxiety. Meditation can be done just about anywhere at any time of the day; just close your eyes and breathe.

Aromatherapy:

The intoxicating smells of lavender, eucalyptus, jasmine, and rosemary may be just what you need to overcome a stressful day and ease your mind. Essential oils can be inhaled or applied to the skin through lotions, bath salts, or massage oil. They work by stimulating smell receptors in the nose and sending messages to the limbic system, eliciting an emotion. Aromatherapy can have a relaxing effect, relieve pain, and improve one’s quality of life.

Journaling:

Journaling about your condition can help you work through your problems and reduce stress and anxiety. The act of writing down your thoughts, feelings, and actions can be very cathartic and help you become more aware of yourself and your behaviors. Make journaling a part of your everyday life and make sure to take it with you on vacations and other adventures.

Stretching:

Sometimes all you need is a good stretch to ease your mind and body. It doesn’t matter if you’re going to a yoga class or stretching in bed, moving your body and stretching your muscles is wonderful for your body and mind. Stretching increases blood flow, relieves stress and muscle soreness, and delivers oxygen to the brain. A nice long stretch is great way to start and end the day.

Socializing:

Whether you talk to a therapist or a good friend, sharing your thoughts and feelings with someone else can be extremely therapeutic. Just having someone listen to you and provide support can help you deal with a tough time in your life and relieve stress. In addition to keeping your family and friends close, you can also expand you social circle by joining clubs, playing sports, and working in groups.

Massage therapy:

Massage can do wonders for your mind and body. The act of kneading muscles reduces inflammation, relieves pain, and enhances cell recovery. It’s one of the rare opportunities where you can completely let go and relax. When done regularly, massage therapy can significantly reduce stress, chronic pain, and improve your overall sense of well-being.

Travel:

One of the best ways to increase your happiness and reduce stress is to have something fun to look forward to. Taking a vacation can boost happiness and renew your sense of self-worth. The act of relaxing on a beach or exploring a city you’ve never seen before can excite the senses, relieve stress, and expose you to different cultures and ideas. Traveling can open your eyes to a better way of life and put things into perspective.
