When it comes to being healthy, there are many moving components involved, whether it be mental, emotional, or physical. But one that doesn’t always get as much attention, despite being as equally important, is sexual health. We can eat a balanced diet, work out regularly and be mentally sound, but that doesn’t mean that our sexual health is up to snuff.
So what does sexual health involve and how do we ensure we’re keeping, well, healthy?
One might think that being sexually healthy simply refers to keeping yourself free of sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies, but it actually goes much deeper than that. Keeping yourself sexually healthy means staying up to date on your yearly physicals, getting screened regularly for STD’s, using protection every time, being able to talk about sex, being comfortable with your body and yourself and only engaging in consensual sexual activity.
It’s a lot to take on, but it starts solely with yourself. Make an appointment with your doctor to make sure everything checks out. Talk to them about protection if you aren’t currently using any sort of birth control and bring up any issues you may have concerns about. This is not the time to be timid or shy. Your doctor is there to help, not judge you. And remember that birth control is great for preventing unwanted pregnancies,but not for preventing STD’s, so be sure to use condoms if you aren’t in a monogamous relationship.
It’s important to get to know yourself, your body and what you do not and do not like. Because, how are you going to enjoy sex with anyone else if you can’t enjoy it with yourself? Sexual health is one of those things that if not taken seriously can have life long lasting effects, whether it be an incurable STD, a child, or a mental aversion to it.
