World AIDS Day The End is Near
This December 1st. is World AIDS Day, a day of observance to spread awareness about the dangers of HIV and how to protect ones self.
This years theme for World AIDS day is “Getting to Zero“, pertaining to no new cases and no new transmissions which is quite the goal.
There are over 34 million people in the world that are infected with HIV and over one million of them are in the U.S. of those that are infected in the U.S. it’s estimated that 20% of them don’t even know that they are infected. This increases the chance of transmitting it to more people by a large margin.
Even Alicia Keys has gotten involved in trying to bring that number down to zero and Hillary Clinton has gotten involved as well. In Africa 72% of all new cases are women and they often transmit it to their children. By eliminating this we can bring down new HIV infections by around half. In the U.S. the CDC has requested that everyone in the country be tested at least once and that people that are involved in high risk activity like use needles for drug purposes be tested every year. Just by increasing testing in this country we can bring down new infection rates significantly.
Started in 1988 World AIDS Day has saved thousands of lives and educated so many people it’s impossible to count. This year, if you’ve never been tested go do it and bring a friend with you. It may be a little scary but it’s very important if we truly want to get our numbers down to zero.
