Speech Therapy to Overcome Depression

According to a recent study from Britain said that talk therapy may be an additional treatment for depression.
Researchers have found that people with depression are not improved despite using antidepressants tend to decrease symptoms of depression with talk therapy added to the treatment regimen. The researchers say that this study is the first major attempt to try the effectiveness of talking therapies when given in conjunction with antidepressants.

The researchers also said that up to two-thirds of people with depression do not respond fully to antidepressant treatment so that these results can show you how to help them. Nicola Wiles, the study from the University of Bristol Centre for Mental Health, Addiction and Suicide Research said that up to now still little evidence that can assist physicians in selecting the best next step for the treatment of patients who no longer respond to standard treatment (using drugs antidepressants).

This study was conducted for one year. Future studies should examine the effectiveness of the combination treatment in the long run because, according to the researchers, patients with depression may recur after treatment.

In addition, Nicola Wiles also added because there are some patients who do not show increased substantially with the addition of speech therapy; further research is needed to find other alternative treatments.

The study included 470 patients with depression who did not improve after being given six weeks of antidepressant treatment. Then the researchers divided them into two groups, the first group treatment coupled with talk therapy, while others do not.

After six months, about 46 percent of the patients in group speech therapy decreased depressive symptoms by at least 50 percent. For the other group only increased by 22 percent. Both groups had experienced the same progression of treatment effect after 12 months. Therefore, the treatment of depression with antidepressants can be helped by speech therapy in order to effect the rapidly felt.
