Joan Kron, Putting Plastic Surgery Out Of The Box

If we have somebody to thank for, it’s Joan Kron. She’s an 85 year old editor of Allure and a journalist on plastic surgery. She was the one of those brought the image of plastic surgery out of the box. In an interview by the New York Times last December 26, 2012, she said that she made her name by simply telling the truth. This revealing of the truth did not only include her age but she also shared information regarding the plastic surgery procedures that she had undergone.
Joan Kron, at her age had tried three face lifts on which she has wrote about her first two surgeries with titles, “Lift: Wanting, Fearing and Having a Face-Lift”. She has also tried Botox, Reloxin, Restylane and Juvederm treatments. “I paid for all the procedures,” Kron insisted. “If I think a doctor gives me discounts, I immediately send them expensive ties and once, I even gave a custom-made alligator boots.”
For the past 20 years or so, plastic surgery have grown from a simply industry to something that’s earning $10 billion in a single year. This is where Kron comes in. She has listed it all down by writing stories and latest research on topics like breast regeneration right after mastectomies. She has also posted the pros and cons of liposuction and Abdominoplasty and the potential risks for having butt lifts.
Because of Kron’s way of treating the plastic surgery field, lots of plastic surgeons and dermatologists allow her to attend their meetings and read their studies. “Plastic surgery has struggled to attract credible journalists to cover it,” says one prominent plastic surgeon. “She (Kron) has brought a perspective to plastic surgery when there is a lot of sensationalism.”
“She tries to make a point of respecting that the doctors are doctors. They went to school for this. They don’t think it is a joke,” says Adeena Babbitt, ASAPS’ public relations director. “With this, she really brings out the field into the entire world,” says another plastic surgeon Dr. Paul McCluskey from www.psiatlanta.com. “I hope more journalists will do the same way.”
Her knowledge on plastic surgery has made her loved by the readers of Allure. In fact, the median age of the readers of Allure made an increase from 34 to 27.9 for the last 10 years. With regards to plastic surgery, she would just say, “I never want to be seen as an advocate for or against it.” However, she adds that she doesn’t think women should keep their wrinkles because they earned them. She says it’s just totally ridiculous.
