Sleep Hormone Melatonin Linked to Weight Loss, Heart Disease Prevention

According to a study conducted at the University of Granada, melatonin can be quite helpful in controlling weight and increasing “good” cholesterol while decreasing “bad” cholesterol.

Obese Rats and Melatonin

After analyzing the effects melatonin had on obese, diabetic rats, the researchers found that melatonin was able to help prevent “heart diseases associated to obesity and dyslipidemia”. Without a change in diet, rats who were given melatonin had a reduction in body weight, decreased blood pressure and an improved lipid profile.

With these findings, they are confident that melatonin may help control obesity and improve blood lipid rations in humans while reducing the overall risk of heart disease.

Melatonin Production

Produced in the pineal gland within the brain and responsible for the sleep and wake cycles in the body, melatonin is known as the sleep hormone. This hormone is necessary to promote deep sleep, which our body needs for repair and maintenance. The production of melatonin is controlled is controlled by our bodies, naturally rising in the  evening, remaining high most of the night, and then dropping by morning.

Many factors come into play for the rate and amount of melatonin production; the amount of light, age, and even seasons can make a difference in how much melatonin is produced. During winter, for example, your body may produce melatonin later or earlier during the day. In addition to the lack of vitamin D, this alteration in melatonin production is thought to bring about the “winter blues.” In addition, melatonin production decreases with age.

While the body produces melatonin on its own, there are a few foods that contain melatonin as well. Goji berries, almonds, sunflower seeds, cardamom, and cherries all contain some melatonin, while small amount can be found in grains, meats, fruit, and vegetables. The most reliable source of melatonin, however, is from a high-quality supplement. When taken 30 minutes before bedtime, melatonin can help promote deep sleep, and, according to the above research, help to prevent obesity and heart disease.

What Else Can Melatonin Do?

Melatonin has the ability to boost our immune system, thereby helping us fight off a number of diseases that could potentially wreak havoc on our bodies. Melatonin is also known to have anti-aging properties so we age at a slower rate. There is also a possibility that melatonin enhances the effects of drugs used to fight cancer. Patients who have trouble responding to cancer drugs have shown better progress when taking melatonin supplements.

Some people are not able to fall asleep easily and there may be some benefit in taking such medication. However if one simply can not be bothered to unwind properly then they should consider the possible harm. Let me be very clear and say that sitting in a quiet and darkened room causes the body to produce it’s own Melatonin and this is well known by the medical profession.

Known side affects include: Daytime sleepiness, dizziness, headaches, abdominal discomfort, mild anxiety, irritability, confusion and depression. Not to mention the known detrimental effects of medication interactions with for example: Anticoagulants, Immunosuppressants, Diabetes medications and Birth control pills.

What-the-hey so long as you don’t mind having changes in sleep patterns, mood swing, cholesterol and blood pressure anomalies as well as disorientation and seizures not to mention increased risk of autoimmune disorders then go for it.

Drug yourself to death for all i care but at least know what it’s all about. Oh who am i kidding? They mentioned weight loss so it will sell by the truck load.

OF THE 150,000 MEDICAMENTS AVAILABLE TODAY LESS THAN TWO DOZEN ARE ANY GOOD.

Now i’d like to take the author to task over another portion of this article but first let me say that i find your moniker incongruous with this subject matter. How can synthetic Melatonin be anything like ‘Natural’ let alone beneficial to ‘Society’ in general. Hmm?

Okay onto my current concern: that animal testing is mentioned offends me the most; how many of us know that rats are unable to develop diabetes naturally. Hmm? I’m saying in no uncertain terms that we manipulate rats into have symptoms like diabetes and for this reason all research based upon this flawed premise is complete nonsense and evil.

What causes me the most offense is vivesection in general: to start with; how dare the mad scientists compare me to a rat, let alone ignoring the dire warning that whatever we do unto the least of HIS will be visited upon us in our turn.

For those who may see my tirade and be concerned to know more; may i suggest. The Slaughter of the Innocent by Hans Ruesch as a book to begin to open our eyes. Read this and you will surely understand why i am passionate about many things medical and the evils visited upon us by deluded and insane folk who have letters after their names and should know better.

As just one example i will offer as evidence the development of penicillin: when we were inventing this we were testing it on pigs and we killed whole swathes of them before we realised that they were allergic to it. In fact, if we had not tested penicillin in clinical trials we may well have never discovered it’s benefits.

For shock value i will clarify a portion of the fine print found on many medicine containers and we can all look for this ourselves on the jars of elixirs and potions that we have in our possession. I want everyone to know what the term “LD50 test” means. This ‘scientific’ test criteria represents that amount of toxic brew that is required to kill half of the test subjects. Its is the “Lethal Dose of 50% of the subjects test”.

While i’m going for shock value let me tell you all how our surgeons are often trained. We take healthy dogs and put them into a press and crush them till bones begin to break; then we hand them over to wannabe surgeons who have a play around with fixing the poor creatures. Don’t for a minute think to yourselves that this is okay because surely we anaesthetise these dogs as in reality the pain response is considered an important part of the diagnosis.

Should anyone wish to contest anything that i purport then be my guest and attempt to dispel as much of these notions as you can. I would be delighted to post myself silly on this thread in the vain hope of getting as many people as possible to wake the “F” up and smell the coffee.

Just in case i am being too subtle let me alleviate any confusion and repeat that of the 150,000 plus medications available today less than two dozen are any good.
