Heighten Standards and Make Strong Regulations, UK Plastic Surgeons Urge

RCS or the Royal College of Surgeons which is an organization of plastic surgeons from UK made a statement with regards to changes they want to the practice of plastic surgery in the same place. This statement serves as a calling or reminder to both patients and surgeons worldwide, particularly in the US. Most of their topics were in relation to giving out realistic results and safety.

In the statement, the RCS pushes their fellow doctors to give considerations to psychological assessment for their patients before letting them have the plastic surgery procedure they want. They also voiced out some concerns regarding some non-surgical methods like Botox injections and laser hair removal that’s done by people who didn’t receive proper medical training. They are pushing that only specialists should be able to carry complex procedures like breast enhancements.

“With the demand for cosmetic surgery and non-surgical treatments rising year on year, it is crucial that the highest level of professionalism is maintained amongst practitioners,” says one member of RCS. Then, there’s what we call at-home cosmetic procedure parties or Botox parties. The college says this should be banned.  This is a gathering where a group of friends go to one’s house and receive injections or dermal fillers.

“The problem is that, home is simply not a safe place for medical procedure,’ says one RCS member. A lot of pointers from the statement from RCS were focused on how plastic surgeons should give correct assessments of the possible results. It included the kind of language they should use, meaning that it should easily be understood by their patients. “Realistic expectations should be more important than commercial success when it comes to explaining procedures to the patients,” statement says.

The college also pushes that surgeons should avoid certain words like “nicer” or “better”. Instead, they should use objective and more appropriate terms like “bigger” and “smaller” when speaking about procedures. They also warned against comparisons to celebrities. The reason is that it could make patients think that they’ll be living a more glamorous life right after their surgery. The fact is that plastic surgeon should improve a person’s self-image not to look like a celebrity.

“Indeed, a lot of people think they could do Botox and other procedures,” says Dr. Daniel H. Lin of http://shinecosmeticsurgery.com/. “But it’s not it. The reason why we spent years of training is to make sure our patients will be safe.”

The statement was intended for UK surgeons but with their broad scope, even plastic surgeons in the USA can benefit from such lines.
