Skip makeup? Beyoncé and other celebrities go bareface

Add this to the list of reasons women love Beyoncé. In addition to being talented, strong, and independent, one of the most beautiful women in the world lets us see her with no makeup.

Often, the star appears barefaced during rehearsals and in front of flashing cameras. Lately, she and other famous beauties such as Jennifer Love Hewitt and AnnaLynne McCord — celebs we usually see caked in foundation, bronzer, layers of eyeliner and false eyelashes — have posted close-ups of themselves on Twitter wearing nothing but a knowing look that says, “Yes, this is what I look like.” Magazines and beauty bloggers go gaga over these photos.

Why the fuss? It’s complicated.
The focus on concealer, foundation and other skin-perfecting products in today’s makeup world implies that the bare female face is somehow inadequate or in need of correction, explains author Phoebe Baker Hyde. So to see one bare, especially when it belongs to a celebrated beauty, is a big deal.

Hyde experienced this firsthand after moving to Hong Kong in 2007. After realizing she was using beauty to mask her fears as a lonely foreigner, first-time parent and frustrated woman trailing behind her husband’s more successful career, Hyde, a former San Franciscan with a background in cultural anthropology, swore off makeup for a year and wrote about the experience in “The Beauty Experiment” (Da Capo Lifelong Books; 2012).
“In the past there was an acceptable June Cleaver ideal of beauty, like putting lipstick on before your husband came home,” says Hyde, who now lives in Boston. “But now we’re living in an era where gender is just one in a range of identity points. Being identified as a man or woman is perhaps less important than being identified as a caregiver, breadwinner or intellectual.”
