16 Signs You’re Magnesium Deficient – Symptoms of Low Magnesium Levels

You may know what magnesium is, but do you know how important the mineral can be for your health? Magnesium is involved with over 300 metabolic processes in our bodies, leading to the mineral being called the ‘master mineral’.  So what exactly does it mean to have a magnesium deficiency, and what are some magnesium deficiency symptoms?

Why Supplementing with Magnesium is a Good Idea

Why? Calcium needs other nutrients that help get calcium into bone matter. Those other nutrients are silica, vitamin D, vitamin K, and guess again – magnesium. Excessive calcium intake has been linked to heart health issues by staying in the blood long enough to calcify into arterial plaque.

Minerals are more important than vitamins, which struggle themselves without minerals. Thanks to modern monoculture farming methods that rely heavily on using chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides that are absorbed into the soil, out topsoil has been heavily depleted of its mineral content.

The master mineral magnesium is missing from most of our topsoil, leaving the vast majority, perhaps 80%, with a failure to meet even the USDA’s recommended dietary allowance (RDA) of 240 to 420 millgrams (based on age). It’s important to note that government RDAs are known to be well below optimum levels. Many experts think our magnesium levels should be twice the amount.

While observing bodily signs can help, you may want to have some tests administered in the end to test whether or not you’re deficient in magnesium. Serum or blood level measurements are usually inadequate because magnesium operates on a cellular level and accumulates in organ and nerve tissue. So even good results with blood testing are very often deceptive, leaving one with a magnesium deficiency. One effective test developed for use by health professionals is the Exa Test (TM).

If testing is unavailable, put your symptom watch hat on. There are many symptoms of magnesium deficiency that relate to cardiovascular, heart, neurological, and muscular dysfunction and disease.

These various symptoms are numerous because of magnesium’s diverse roles in so many different cellular metabolic functions.

16 Magnesium Deficiency Symptoms

As mentioned, magnesium is a mineral responsible for numerous bodily processes. An anti-inflammatory mineral offering protection against illnesses like arthritis and Alzheimer’s disease, magnesium has been used to remedy problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, respiratory issues, and much more. But as you may suspect, just as upping magnesium intake can solve problems, a magnesium deficiency could lead to many of those same issues and much more.

Here are 16 signs of a magnesium deficiency.

  • Calcium deficiency
  • Poor heart health
  • Weakness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Tremors
  • Nausea
  • Anxiety
  • High blood pressure
  • Type II diabetes
  • Respiratory issues
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Potassium deficiency
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Poor memory
  • Confusion

How to Safely Supplement Magnesium

It’s almost impossible to overdose magnesium by supplementing, but consuming too much magnesium is still not a great idea. Too much of the mineral could lead to some side effects like irregular heartbeat or slowed breathing. Similar to oral ascorbic acid C, there is a bowel tolerance threshold that brings on diarrhea if exceeded. Not all magnesium supplements are easily absorbed, either.

You can find inexpensive products that feature magnesium citrate, which is among the most readily absorbed forms of magnesium supplements.

You can also apply transdermal magnesium chloride topically to be absorbed internally through the skin. Magnesium chloride is also known as magnesium oil, though not really an oil. It’s a briny solution from ancient sea beds. It is available through various online sources. Google magnesium oil products.

If you don’t want to supplement and simply want to acquire magnesium through food sources, here are a few foods that can relieve you of any magnesium deficiency symptoms:

  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Soybeans
  • Black beans
  • Cashews
  • Spinach
  • Squash
  • Sesame seeds
  • Almonds
  • Okra

other sources are magnesium supplements (mag citrate is good) as well as Epsom salts in the bath (don’t ingest them, as this can give you too much, and has been known to lead to death after the diarrhoea), and magnesium oil applied to the skin. Big expert on this is Dr Mark Sircus.

Magnesium absorbs well through the skin and is recommended as best method for increasing magnesium in the body. A foot bath or whole body bath in Epsom salt is an excellent way of not only increasing body magnesium, but also supplies sulfur which is often lacking in diet.

I had muscle spasms in my abdomen regularly and it was so bad it left knots for several days. This went on for weeks. The doctor said it was probably low magnesium levels and he put me on prescription strength magnesium. Within 36 hours they had stopped. Even if you get a well balanced diet electrolytes in your body can be low especially when you get in your 50′s. I have also had low sodium and potassium levels before. If these get too low you can go into cardiac arrythmia and even die. It’s definitely worth the money to get your electrolytes checked at least yearly when you get your annual physical exam. Most doctors will automatically order them. If not and you have symptoms of lightheadedness/dizziness, muscle spasms/cramps, or all of a sudden have an irregular heartbeat or are in your 50′s definitely get them checked.

Molasses is another good source for magnesium.

A good article. For magnesium supplements, remember, do not buy tablets, or capsules with stearates.
Regardless of the BS vitamin makers claim, stearates block up to 90% of the ingredient you’re paying for, thereby ripping you off.
Also, while mag is not a gmo plant, obviously, if it’s in a mix with other ingredients, be sure to email the company to insure there are No GMOs in it.

You would be sick if you realized how many companies are using GMOs in their ‘vitamins’. It’s the ultimate slap in the face. Always email before buying to insure no GMOs.

To find vits with no stearates just search the product you want and ‘no stearates’ in quotes, there aren’t a lot, but they are out there and worth finding.

soybeans are a good source of magnesium? soy one of the most gmoed food. i can’t find many foods that don’t contain soy. i’ll just stick with the epsom salt baths. add dmso to really get it into your pores. dmso, good stuff.

        Agreed.

The fact I just read the whole article proves I’m Magnesium deficient.

Also be careful if you are taking any types of proton pump inhibitors such as prilosec, zantac, etc on a daily basis . This garbage stops or limits the absorption of Magnesium. You should look for alternative ways to control acid reflux, such as diet changes, Manuka Honey 16+ or higher, zinc carnosine, Apple Cider Vinegar, Mastik Gum, etc… I know first hand cause it happened to me, I was getting premature ventricular contractions ( irregular heart beats) after taking prilosec for a month.
