% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Atkins diet, officially known as the Atkins Nutritional Approach, is low carbohydrate diet. Robert Atkins initially promoted this diet and so the name to this diet originated from his name. Atkins diet has been in use since long to lose weight. The low carbohydrate diet has been observed to die and get reborn after every 25 years. Atkins diet has nowadays started giving an umbrella to such a diet. Wlliam Banting found in a study that lowering carbohydrates through diets, lowered body weight to a significant level. The new diet recently got popular and the people following it became known as the Banting knights. This low carb diet has always been criticized by the medical professionals as they were dangerous for the health of the people having it. This diet however, came again in 1970 under the banner of Atkins diet.

Carbohydrates are rich in starch and they easily act in deposition of fat on the body in you have cooked food. This happens because many enzymes that assist in conversion of starch into sugar is lost while cooking and thus the carbs are not easily converted into sugar that could be utilize by the body for energy production. This acts as a reason for ft deposition in the body. This might also bring certain hormonal changes in the body. These hormones are responsible for controlling the conversion of carbohydrates into sugar and not into fats. As time passes, the body loses its ability to secrete the hormones as well as the enzymes and thus it leads to deposition of fats on the hips. This happens commonly in young women and occurs within a time of 2 years. Furthermore, it adds up to the bad reputation of carbohydrates for being bad for health.

Your body needs energy to keep it functioning. If you feed yourself only on proteins and avoid carbohydrate rich food, your body will have no other option that to burn the fats to fulfill its energy needs. This may however result in catastrophic imbalance in the body. Low carbohydrate diets are called the uremic diet as high protein diet produces urea and ammonia in the body. Both of these can be dangerous to the body. You then need to intake large amount of water to flush out these toxic materials from the body. The intercellular fluid is drained due to dehydration and leads to chronic cellular dehydration. This may further lead to diseases like kidney stones and bone loss.

Some of the symptoms of being on a protein rich diet are similar to being on starvation. Initially it starts with the loss of sodium and water and gradually it results in loss of potassium too. This is then followed by breakdown of the body proteins. This might result in fatigue, muscle wasting and weakness. These all factors may create an environment for the body when the body metabolic rate may fall down and lead to sudden weight gain. The metabolism rate once lowered would take months to regain its original level. High protein or fat diet is also known as ketogenic diet. Fats cannot be oxidized without the presence of carbohydrates and this leads to a condition where accumulation of ketone bodies takes place and the condition is known as ketosis. High protein diet may also make your body to produce more of lactic acid, which may lead to acidosis.
