Stress, Antidepressants, Weight Changes And Divorce Can Make You Look Older, Study Reveals

The wrinkles of your mom or the lack of it may not be the simplest determinant of how you will look when you age. The fact is new study just states the contrary. This particular study which involves identical twins, is suggesting that despite the genetic factors, some environmental conditions can actually add years to a person’s current age. “A person’s heritage may initially dictate how they age – but if you introduce certain factors into your life, you will certainly age faster. Likewise, if you avoid those factors you can slow down the hands of time,” says a member surgeon and the study author Bahaman Guyuron, MD. “In this study, we looked at identical twins because they are genetically programmed to age exactly the same, and in doing so we essentially discovered that, when it comes to your face, it is possible to cheat your biological clock.”

In the study, Dr. Guyuron along with his colleagues made comprehensive questionnaires and digital images of about 180 plus pairs of identical twins. These images were then reviewed by an independent panel which recorded the perceived age difference between the siblings. Results revealed that the twins who have been divorced obviously had about 2 years older as compared to the other siblings who were married, single or even widowed. The use of antidepressants were noted and associated with the older appearance. Researchers also found out that weight played a major factor as well. Those sets of twins who were less than 40, the heavier twins were perceived to be much older. Meanwhile the groups who were more than 40 years old, the heavier twin appeared younger.

“The presence of stress could be one of the common denominators in those twins who appeared older,” says Dr. Guyuron. .” Additionally, researchers suspect that continued relaxation of the facial muscles due to antidepressant use, could account for sagging. And though they do not advocate gaining weight to look younger, researchers note that losing abnormal amounts of weight not only have harmful effects on a person’s health, but on their appearance, too.”

“This research is important for two reasons,” Dr. Guyuron continues. “First, we have discovered a number of new factors that contribute to aging and second, our findings put science behind the idea that volume replacement rejuvenates the face.”
